Hi – odd one this.
I booked a Club Suite flight while I was a Silver member, and chose my preferred seats on the 777. I then lost my Silver status a few months ago (too much flying on Avios and 2-4-1s…).
BA has just changed the plane to an A380 and has dumped us in two crappy seats, and is now demanding that I pay to move myself – even though I would have chosen (for free) entirely different seats if I’d had the chance to do so at booking.
A call to the Exec Club call centre resulted in a “we’re very sorry, but we can’t override the computer” response. They acknowledge that it is their aircraft swap that has thrown this up – but can’t/won’t do anything to exercise some discretion and put me into better seats.
Has anyone else experienced this? Any suggestions beyond trying another agent on another call?
Earn/maintain status allows you to choose seats for free? You’re asking for more than you’re entitled to.
It’s a fairly frequently discussed downside of losing status before you take a flight booked while you had the higher status. I suppose BA’s point is that they can change aircraft at any time, and it just happens to be that at this time you are Bronze and only able to select your seats at T-7.
This is very common when there is e.g. an aircraft change and peoples status has changed between booking and the flight.
Since you are now Bronze you’ll be able to select something else a week before departure and up to checkin close time .
No point in you wasting any of yours or BAs time on this.
It’s a difficult one because the seating is so very different. It’s a shame BA’s IT doesn’t allow exacting seating preferences in case of plane swaps in MMB, but I know that isn’t going to happen.
It’s a difficult one
It’s not difficult at all – if you don’t have the status, then you pay. Simple as that.
My silver status just lapsed, booked my 241 flight & seats just ahead of falling to bronze. I’m pleasantly surprised to read that your seats were reallocated with the equipment swap. I was anticipating seat allocation being removed completely following an equipment change.
Call them again. It no longer easy to get Silver. They should be respectful and thankful for your custom. I’d have torn them a new one.

What? It’s exactly the same number of TPs to get silver as it was last year, and the year before and so on and and so on.
And with the double TP Ba Hols offer it’s even easier!
And beng rude to some poor phone agent isn’t going to get you anything from BA.
