One tip I would suggest for the OPs sister (well anyone really) who might be a bit antsy about using credit cards in foreign lands is to get one of those top-up cards such as FairFx where even if someone physically steals the card it’s basically useless as there are only limited funds on it to be used I.e. the amount you have loaded onto it

Yep, Wise is also a good option. Easy to lock and good fx rates.
Even locally, always use the debit card of a second account that doesn’t hold more than a small balance. You can top up from primary account when required.
And all these apply only if you cannot use Apple Pay.

Just to check, did the Oyster card balance update and was there a matching charge for it?

Just to post an update on this. The bank in Ireland refunfed the money to my sister. I don’t have all details yet which I’m sure I’ll get once back in Ireland for Christmas.

She reported it to BTP, Met police and action fraud. Other than acknowledgement emails she has heard nothing back.

She wouldn’t normally keep close to that amount in her current account but had gotten paid early and not realised

That’s good news. Thanks for letting us know this positive outcome. Did your sister find out whether she was scammed at the tube station or elsewhere?

I’m really glad she got the money refunded.

And it’s great you note she only had such a high balance as she had just gotten paid (unnoticed). As many have noted in the comments, I also aim to keep a low current account balance, but indeed the one exception to this is when a salary hits at an unexpected time, so a good heads up to be even more cautious around payday.

Yes this is great news, your sister must be so relieved.

I had an ISA mature a couple of weeks ago and had set up instructions for it to be transferred to my current account. This story was in my mind so I moved the money into accounts which don’t have debit cards!!

@travelersolo would you be so kind as to share how your sister was able to recover the funds as I have had a similar experience and would like to know how to best navigate this.

    Many thanks in advance!
