Had a paper statement to show an unexpected £15 credit balance from some very late applied Paypal credit’s following an Autumn spend promotion. The credit is on my now closed, Amex Platinum, for which I was the primary card holder. Logged on to online chat to ask for a refund to bank account, only to be told that they cannot do it.
As I am now a supp card holder to my wife’s main Amex platinum, she needs to log in and use chat to ask for the refund, even though it’s not on a card in her name, and an account for which she was only a supp card holder.
I don’t understand that. Anyone has similar experiences ?
I have had a £30 credit on a closed Gold card since 2016. I asked them a dozen times to apply it to my BAPP or Platinum. Each time they say it’s done and never happens.
I’m not bothered and won’t be asking them again. They have also been sending me paper statements every month for the closed card showing credit balance. Must have cost them more than £30 by now.
I had a £25 credit on a closed amex card;I couldnt be bothered with it.
After about 4 monthly statements they sent me a cheque. As I am now a supp card holder to my wife’s main Amex platinum, she needs to log in and use chat to ask for the refund, even though it’s not on a card in her name, and an account for which she was only a supp card holder.
This won’t work, whichever agent told you this is talking nonsense.
They used to happily move a credit balance from one primary card to another, no more.
I had under £7… First they tried to trace back to the underlying transaction, then they expected me to remember how I’d paid the bill for that particular statement.
Ideally they seem to want to put it back on the payment method used. Worst case insist on a cheque via chat, seems to be the easiest way.
I’ve had it where they’ve been confused by the fact I was logged into my account for a refund as a supp on another account. Try phoning instead and using the account details for the closed account.

Why complicate when you could have just asked for a bank transfer?

I did! They said they can’t because the amount is too small.
That’s ridiculous. I got 11.76 cashback back from a LNER journy in Feb, was credited in Sept after I’d closed the card early august. One call to the famously bad virgin money team and the bank transfer was done next day.
Total call time inc holding was about 4 mins.
Amex are really dropping the ball here.

That’s nonsense. I had a £15 refund credit on a closed PRG transferred to my current account last month with no issues on chat.
They will never transfer a credit balance to another Amex unless its a card annual fee refund.

You have been really unlucky! I just had a refund the other day of ~£4 (18 months after the card was closed and the line on the statement just said “credit adjustment”, was a bit weird) and had no trouble requesting a bank transfer over chat.
I think I’ve requested over 10 bank transfers over the years, and the only one requiring more effort was one over >£500 which required a bank statement to be uploaded.I did! They said they can’t because the amount is too small.

Not true. I had a credit come back to an amex gold which was closed because I’d switched to a basic MR card and they happily moved that across.

I can assure you that it is true throughout 2022 and on that occasion you were very lucky, unless of course it was a few years ago when the rules may well have been different.
OP should cite Amex’s own FAQ page to the live chat person

I have a credit on my Account. Can I transfer this money to another American Express Card that I hold?
Yes, as long as you are the main Account holder, and have the same details, for both Cards. Please contact us via chat in the Amex App, or online, or call the number on the back of your Card and we’ll be glad to help with this. Please make sure you have your Card to hand.
I’ve cancelled my Card but am expecting a refund from a merchant. Will I still receive my refund?
Don’t worry, refunds will still process to a cancelled Account. When the refund arrives in your Account, contact us via Live Chat online, or call the number on the back of your Card to arrange a credit balance refund to your bank account.
So yes, you can transfer it to another card, or back to a bank account. Irrespective of the amount
No you can’t. I’ve tried twice during 2022 and received the answer ‘No’ twice from both Chat and Brighton over the phone, so if you don’t mind, I won’t pay any attention to your outdated T&C’s.

I’ve also been told “no” on this throughout 2022.
Amusingly, when they’ve told me they’ll do a bank transfer I end up getting a cheque in the post, and when they say they’ll send a cheque they actually end up doing a bank transfer…
I’ve transferred £10 (2 SS credits) from a closed Amex to another open one in the last three months
All that the above illustrates is that everyone gets told something different based on who assists you…
What are you referring to when you say ‘2 SS credits’?

Shop small
Well that’s different to a refund from a retailer. Any credits direct from Amex such as card fee refunds, Shop Small credits etc can be transferred to another Amex, but not refunds from a previous third party purchase transaction.

They’re not outdated, that’s a current page on the Amex website and is an FAQ list. It’s quite clear from those answers that they are still current. HUACA is the way to go.
(We are still living through a pandemic even though it’s being widely ignored so that local/global economies don’t collapse. Just because treatments and vaccinations are available and suitable for some of the population doesn’t mean it’s gone away)
Written in 2020.
Here’s an idea @davefl…why don’t you just buy something on an Amex, close the card, have the purchase refunded and see how you get on having the refund credited to a different Amex in your name in 2022/23. Good luck!

By the way, it must be a purchase from a third party, because cashback direct from Amex offers, such as Shop Small, Deliveroo and retailer offers are still all fine to be refunded to another Amex in your name.
Requested a credit balance refund today via chat. Was processed via bank transfer (was asked for bank account details etc). I was asked which was the last payment method (debit card)
Same, my balance was around £3.5k – input bank details in chat when asked (underlying I paid using debit card but did use 2 different bank accounts over the course of card membership) the details I put in “did not pass verification” so they opted to send out a cheque…
