Has anyone successfully claimed a VAT refund from South Africa?
We were there last year (May 23). We submitted our claim as per the instructions at JNB airport. We are still waiting our refund over 12 months later.
Any attempt to contact the VAT refund agency gets no response. I can only find a general email address.
Just wondered if anyone has done this and actually received the refund, and if so how long it took.We did receive our refund from a trip about 4 years ago – long wait I think.
We were there again in December and we’re still waiting for the refund. When we check it says they’re still working on it.
I’ve done this once, just to see what a pain it was. Long story short, it took a year and a half to actually receive the refund card. I had to email about a million times in between and resubmit a lot of personal information, but in the end the card arrived. Activating it also required a rigmarole of emails.
Never again
They don’t issue a card anymore, but are supposed to pay direct to your account via swift (BIC & IBAN). Mine has been showing ‘Approved, Pending Payment’ for months now.
They did respond to a couple of emails, again months back, but now they just do not respond.
It was not a large amount. I will just have to sit it out and see if it ever turns up.
