So on our way to Japan next year (for the cherry blossom), we have two weeks in South Korea.

Does anyone have any tips or advice for South Korea, Japan there seems to be plenty but Korea is a bit thin on the ground.

Any advice or tips is greatly welcomed.

    Thanks

The DMZ tours are super interesting, particularly including the JSA.

We went with these guys: http://www.koridoor.co.kr/

It’s super touch-and-go, though. Think it was on and off about five times as it depends on the US military and only happens on some days.

    Hi @Sobeboy15
I have been to South Korea twice in the last 3 years, the last time in May this year. One of my daughters has moved there, but I had never been there before then.
I love Seoul and how mad busy it can be.
Namsan Hill and Tower are worthwhile walking up or taking the cable car for views across the city.
Indoor food markets are fun, just sit down and join in. The metro system is easy to use and signs are in English as well as announcements on the trains too. Get a travel card.
Palaces and museums very interesting if that’s your thing, it is mine.
Cheonggyecheon Stream through the city to the ‘library’ is a nice walk. As is the ‘library’ at Seoul Plaza where you can sit and chill, there’s often an exhibition on.
A favourite area of mine to find quirky shops and restaurants/bars/coffee (from late afternoon onwards) is the Mullae-dong district. Get off at Sindorim station, 10 mins walk.
Most importantly, people are fantastic, very patient if your language skills aren’t great.
Outside of Seoul I went to the DMZ recently and you have to remember your passport or you won’t get near. It’s worth the trip.
Jeongju has a beautiful Hanok village (traditional houses) that we stayed in for a couple of days. It’s also the home of Bibimbap.
Geongju is very historic with lots of sites to see and has a very good museum.
Korean trains are fast and efficient. Intercity buses are worth considering too.
Re the food, be adventurous. I’m sure if you’re going to Japan then you know that. Vegetarians and vegans may struggle at some restaurants, but we found a vegan resto in Seoul which was very good as we had a vegan in our group (I’m very much not a vegan btw!). In fact I love the Korean version of black pudding….
My only other observation is to wear slip-on shoes if going to any homes/apartments. So much easier than doing laces all the time.
It is v cold in winter, hot/wet/humid in summer so best times to go are April/May or Sept/Oct. Cherry blossom time should be perfect.
Enjoy your trip en route to Japan.
