Forums Other Destination advice Sumo in Japan (late October).

Here is a challenge for the community:
We will be in Japan (Tokyo, OSAKA AND Kyoto) in late October 2024. My wife has asked if we could take in a sumo match – but it looks as if there is no professional sumo scheduled for that time.
Does any reader have advice on how to see some lower grade (or amateur) sumo?
    Thanks

No idea of the answer, but I believe you can go to training camps as well.

You can book a sumo experience via the usual experiences/activities sites such aa Viator, Klook, etc. It won’t be that interesting as a real match, but will give you some idea.

It’s a real shame your trip doesn’t coincide with a tournament. I would heartily recommend going along to anyone who is visiting at the time of a tournament. I went to the final day of the January 2020 edition when it was won by the lowest ranked sumo for the first time in many years – the atmosphere was terrific.

I’d definitely agree with the suggestion of visiting a sumo stable. I did it many years ago and we got to watch some training bouts as well as meet a top sumo wrestler.
