Discuss today's stories:
I signed up for the basic Barclaycard Avios card and would like to upgrade to the Avios Plus card for £20 a month. The app does not give me the option to upgrade. I rang up customer service and was told this is not possible. I spend over 20K a year on this card and it is crazy that I cannot upgrade. Does anyone have experience of this issue?
Many, many reports of this. If you haven’t got the offer, you won’t get the upgrade. How long have you had the card? Offers sometimes start appearing after about 4 months. Have you scrolled through the “Transfers and Offers” page in the app?
If you’re easily spending £20k on the card, though, you may as well save yourself the fee!
As NorthernLass said, you only can do it if it shows as an option. For example, when I first got the paid card I was able to downgrade to the free one (which I eventually cancelled). I got the paid card again late last year, and I have no option to downgrade at the moment.
One option is to cancell the card and wait a few months to apply to the paid version.
I’ve had the card 18 months, spent £20k in the first year and I’m well on my way this year. The upgrade option has never appeared.
