Forums Other Destination advice Thailand for digital nomads

  • 249 posts

My daughter and her boyfriend have decided to live a more exciting life and have chosen Thailand to start their adventures. They are digital nomads and as long as they have good WiFi they can work.

Perhaps this is not the best site to ask as it’s not a holiday and they certainly won’t be using points but does anyone have suggestions about where in Thailand would be a good place to start . They’re planning on booking something for a month ahead of time and then will take time to see where they want to be from there. Late twenties but not particularly party animals. As low cost as possible although I don’t see my daughter living in a beach hut 😬

I am full of parental angst about it all but also excited for them, perhaps even a little envious.

    Any thoughts ?

I guess it depends on a few factors, but Bangkok might be the best starting point.

The weather should be a key consideration – they don’t want to turn up to flooding, but BKK is well placed to see other parts of Thailand and decide where next.

Note they will only get a one month visa on arrival and whilst that can be renewed in the country, I understand it’s easier to just hop over the border for the weekend.

And as you say other sites will likely be better for this but they probably don’t want to hang around in a single country for too long as questions will likely start being asked about paying taxes.

From a few friends of mine who have done this, as well as seeing it for myself, Chiang Mai, specifically seems the place to be for these ‘digital nomad’ sorts. It’s very well set up digital nomads with shared working spaces, serviced apartments/airbnbs etc.

Second recommendation for Chiang Mai – perfect for this type of life, good community and facilities. Just beware of the periods with poor air quality when neighbouring countries burn large areas of land; it’s not good for asthmatics at those times.

    Chiangmai certainly!

I think she’s wants to be by the sea, she and I both grew up by the sea and now live far away from it. I can’t begin to say how much I crave the ocean, even the North Sea 🤣

@Annie, I’m the same! We’re currently stuck inland until after the A levels, and just last night I told my OH that I desperately miss swimming in the sea and am going to spend 2 weeks doing just that when we finally get away at the end of June!

nomadlist.com seemed interesting when I came across it a while back.

As a matter of interest @Annie roughly what type of work do they do?

It’s not like the European beaches. After a couple of weeks you’ll get bored and the heat and humidity, especially in the summer won’t be good. It’s just a short hop away anyway and nice to use them as a break.

Chiang Mai definitely does have the reputation and set-up (as does Ubud in Bali).
It’s also pretty well connected, with some great cheap direct flights.

So they NY Stock Exchange would open 2030h BKK time…
Still, I knew plenty of people in Singapore who worked like that.

A short visit would be very easy, although the visa/income requirements are pretty tricky if they’re
planning on staying there for more than that.

Yes that suits them perfectly. They are not morning people.
They are planning to book something from Airbnb for a month and then go from there. I’m thinking it would be cheaper to find something once there and only initially book for a week.

Good news for them that NYSE is considering trading 24 hours.
