Recently bought our solar panels using the Amex (had the cash as recently moved house so cost nothing in interest) earning us some 16K in points (we have the card with 1.5 points per £1 spend).
Then noticed you can “boost” recent points transactions. It costs just £462 to earn 50k points by tripling the last transaction of choice.
I’ve never purchased avios before so quickly calculated it would take a spend of £33K to earn this on the Barclaycard/Amex, and then checked how much it would cost to buy the avios outright which was £899.
So went ahead, and the kicker was I purchased the boost on the Amex earning another 750 points for the pleasure.
This feels like a win to me but first time I’ve ever done anything like this! Had no idea it was so cost effective to buy avios too and know there are avios sale events which I’ve never paid too much attention to.
Was this a good deal? Should we be buying/boosting avios more? Seems like great value to or have my calculations gone wrong somewhere.
It’s a good deal if you have a use for the Avios. Also good if you’re spending towards a target such as the threshold for a companion voucher. Otherwise you are at risk of any Avios devaluations .
