    Interesting post, thanks.
Given that the new flagship Club Suite is also falling apart, and hygiene is very poor, it seems like a corporate decision to hold very low standards. But Covid shortages and heavy rotation sounds far better ‘we’re saving money in maintenance and parts’ or ‘we didn’t choose the right materials during the procurement process’

I think much of the cleaning and cabin maintenance fails because BA utilise their fleet so fully. This rather relaxed standard of behaviour then extends to the opportunities when sufficient time is available to repair and clean, but it isn’t used to do so. My guess is they utilise the cleaners and cabin maintenance resources to the same degree meaning it’s only when fleet/people downtime coincide does anything more meaningful happen.
Anyway up it’s BA problem to fix. When you get a dirty or broken seat always complain onboard and ask for a report to be made by the In Flight Lead, so it’s not some subsequent your word against there’s.

Even for such a cost conscious airline, it is incredibly difficult to understand why you would choose not to clean and maintain the interior of any part of such valuable aircraft assets.

I met a guy on a Qatar A380 who worked for BA maintaining the interior of their fleet. He was telling me that every seat on Qatar is sat in, visually inspected and functionality physically checked at regular intervals, unlike BA where he bemoaned the lack of opportunities to stay on top of the maintenance. I wasn’t complaining either, we just struck up a conversation about our respective jobs and he volunteered the comparison.

It seems that upholding standards with consequences for slippage of these is frowned upon by some folk here in Britain. I often read about how people refuse to travel on ME3 airlines etc for moral reasons.

Similarly, on A380 turnarounds, Emirates will have double the number of cleaners on board.

I feel bad for the BA staff. The vast majority of people want to do a good job at what they do and they will be able to see how they’re not given the time or resource to do a good job and no matter how hard they try it realistically won’t make a dent. The cabin crew really do carry the weight of trying to make up for that shortfall.

I would only fly long haul BA in Economy where you’ve no greater expectation than a seat, a hoovered floor and an edible meal. I know that safety critical aspects of the flight are taken care and can relax. Flying in a higher class is a waste of money with such a poor product, next to no maintenance of interiors and highly variable service standards. My Avios goes to IB on long haul and if I really wanted to fly somewhere they don’t fly, I’d use Qatar. As for cash tickets in a premium class on BA even in a sale, not a chance.
