Forums Frequent flyer programs The British Airways Club Tier Point Calculations

  • 1 post

    Hi there,

With the new tier point collection rules in place I was curious to see what sort of tier points my wife would earn on a recent work trip to NYC

She flew business class (R bucket ticket) on AA and returned on same ticket type with BA. The trip was booked on the 12th Aug, and she is signed up to the promotion for bonus tier points. Total paid for the ticket was £7800 rounded.

Looking at her account online, she has been credited with 1265 tier points each way (2530 total). Which seems a far cry from the 1 tier point per £1 – considering 800 of them are bonus allocations as well.

Going back and reading the rules the AA leg shouldn’t matter as it seems they credit the full 1tp/£ – so im wondering – did she get short-changed here – and should contact BA – or is there something else im missing?

When was the ticket booked. Who with AA or BA

The £ 1 per TP only applies to the base fare and airline surcharges. Proper taxes and airport fees are exluded so TPs will always be lower than the cash price due to that.

In her BAC account is should say the £ element in the ‘more details’ section of the post

True, but if the cost was £7800 no way was there £5270 in taxes!

Maybe it was a travel agent booking with undisclosed fare, so based on distance rather than cost? The fact that it earned the same TP both ways supports that, as the outbound and inbound fares are typically different and where applicable earn differently.

If this had been booked as a BA Holiday it could have got OP’s wife to silver!

How often does she do this kind of trip?

Looks like the ticket was booked using a non-UK travel agent. R fare on that route gives 865 tier points on the distance-based chart (which only triggers when BA/AA can’t ‘see’ the total fare paid), which tallies with the 1265 that she got after the bonus.

Doesn’t sound there’s much to be done, unfortunately. If she has a booking receipt that shows the total paid and the fact that the ticket was booked directly with either AA or BA, she can submit a missing points claim.

Equally, no way was £7800 the fare actually paid. That’s just the official or notional fare.
