Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points

I have 420 ba tier points, I have Bronze status (just awarded) and Membership year ends: 08 Apr 2023 and Card expiry date: 31 May 2024.

    My questions are:
how many more tier points do I need in order to qualify for silver status? Is 20 or 170?
If I get the required tier points will I immediately qualify for silver status or will I qualify from 08 April 2023?
Any recommendations of how to get the necessary tier points in the most convenient and cheapest way? Given that Manchester is my nearest airport with services to Heathrow but Leeds/Bradford and Doncaster/Robin Hood are a lot closer.

Once you qualify you get the status there and then (well a couple of days later) and ot lasts for the remainder of the year you earned it it and the whole of the next year.

As to how many TPs you need my understanding is the lower threshold applies until 31st December 2022 so you’d need 20.

If you need 170 then the AY MAN-HEL flight in Business would get you 160 and if you did MAN-LHR-ARN return it would be 240.

THrre is a list on here about which BA destinations earn 80 TPs (ATH is one) so there are several combinations.

Thanks for the information, I appreciate it!

You need 30 more TPs not 20 (by the end of 2022), which is slightly harder.

20 can be achieved with a round trip to Heathrow in something more expensive than the cheapest economy fare, or 2 round trips at the cheapest fare.

Unless you really want to get silver *before* your next BA trip, I wouldn’t do a special TP run.

If you do want to then for convenience I would just find the cheapest MAN-LHR in business for 40TPs then take a train back (unless flying + getting home is cheaper).

Sorry, for a typo in the original post – I actually have 430 tier points. Finding a cheap method to achieve that final twenty is proving difficult!

4 domestic sectors in economy? Use the low fare finder tool to find the cheapest time to go and do it over a weekend?

Have been there too. So annoying that most EU/UK flights are 5 TP (in Japan they are 10 minimum with JAL).

You can fly to Bucharest and back in economy or a similar long EU flight (Greece or the Canary Islands, Helsinki, I believe).

If you want to do it in style. Why not do the LHR-MAD on the A330/350 and flight business back and forth for around £250? At least you get to lay back in true business seat.

Do you actually have 430 Tier Points right now (that you have earned this month) or were they earned prior to 8 April?

If you can get through on the phone to BA it should be possible to book a domestic return (or any other return) into one of the booking classes that gives 10 TP per leg – it will cost a bit more than the lowest fare, but probably not too much. Doing that for MAN-LHR-MAN is probably your easiest/cheapest/quickest route to 20TP. Alternatively pick somewhere you want to go for a weekend on the low fare finder – MAN-LHR-anywhere return will get you enough TP in any class.

All 430 tier points were earned in April! In order to get the 20 extra I am going to fly to Munich in September, on CE return on a cash booking and try to book my wife the same flight on an Avios booking!

One thing to point out is that if you wait until September to take your tier point earning flight, you will only qualify for Silver from that point, whereas if you did it asap, you benefit from Silver for more of the remainder of this membership year and the whole of the next one. This could be significant if you would like to take any One World flights this summer as Silver will give you lounge access, double luggage allowance, as well as seat selection at the time of booking.
