    Trying to avoid the C word (no, not that c word).

    Was it confirmed that you need two years without holding the card before you become eligible for the SUB, aka Amex style?

    Barclaycard is slightly different. It’s a six month gap. This is a total six month ban – unlike Amex, where you can reapply early and forfeit your bonus, Barclaycard simply won’t touch you again for 6 months.

    The issue is whether they will have you back after that, and we won’t know that for a probably a year.

    Rob – do you know what happens to your voucher progress (for want of a better term), if you downgrade? I’m thinking once I hit the 3k spend on Avios Plus I’ll take out Amex Platinum for the 60k SUB… but while I’m paying for the Platinum it doesn’t make sense to keep paying £20 a month for the Avios Plus Barclaycard.

    If I downgrade to the free Avios card, does my existing spend on the Avios Plus count towards the voucher at the £20k threshold, with the same target date (March 2023), or does the whole thing reset to zero?

    Thanks for that Rob.

    Have you triggered the sign up bonus then, @Aston100? I’m planning to trigger that and the voucher in the next week or so. I don’t think £240 a year without a further sign up bonus is worth it for what is effectively the old Lloyds upgrade voucher which was £24 per year.

    Yes in the first week. Had a large purchase I was holding back awaiting this card.
    Spend tracker shows the target met and the avios are waiting to go across at the start of next month.

    Good to know the spend tracker is working! I am hovering over our final car payment and thinking maybe I should wait until the cash to pay the Barclaycard bill is safely in the bank next month!

    Weren’t you thinking of getting player 2 their own card shortly?
    Would it make sense to leave some if it for that card?

    Player 2 is the main cardholder, I would have to give up HH and wait 6 months which I don’t want to do atm. There’s possibly a player 3 in the wings as well! Needless to say Player 2 was not impressed with the shenanigans and not bothered about keeping the card long term.

    @Aston100
    – while you can apply for a new card after six months, aren’t you precluded from getting the welcome bonus again for two years? That is how it was presented at the launch on HfP and appears in the terms:-

    « We’ll only apply one Avios Welcome Bonus in relation to your card to your BAEC account during the lifetime of your card account. If you close your card account after you receive your Avios Welcome Bonus and then open another Barclaycard Avios card account within 2 years after you closed the original account, you will not be eligible for another Avios Welcome Bonus.«

    It isn’t clear whether you would be able to earn a second upgrade voucher within 12 months.
