I read today of the death of two guests at Hyatt in Baja California from carbon monoxide poisoning. The monitors had been turned off.
You can’t protect against everything but if I was renting a villa with gas I’d certainly think about it nowadays.
It’s not that uncommon a way to go and, having young kids, perhaps I feel overly protective but they aren’t big bits of kit.
And given that the law here is now one in every room there is a gas appliance or boiler, I have six in my house so easy enough to grab one to go!
This is one of the reasons I don’t like hotels without openable windows.
There have also been deaths in reported in Greece and the Bahamas in the past couple of years. Never assume safety standards are the same wherever you go.

Agreed. I feel the the same with activities with an element of risk of things do wrong, like parasailing. Consider the likely safety standard based on the country, resort etc you are in and decide whether it stacks up in your favour or not.
Yep. A few years ago we were on the beach in GCM when an American chap was brought to shore a few feet away from us, having collided on a jet ski and been killed. Despite being on one of the “safest” islands on the planet, the jet ski company had rented machines to a drunk American cruise passenger and a very inexperienced teenaged boy, with fatal consequences. It may not have made any difference, but there was also no defibrillator to be had in any of the nearby hotels or dive boats, and this in the most affluent territory in the region.
