Forums Frequent flyer programs The British Airways Club Transitional arrangements for pre 30 December partner airline bookings?

  • 6 posts

Has anyone had experience with Tier Points on bookings with OneWorld Airlines (other than Iberia and AA) made prior to the 30 December BA Club Announcement for travel after 1 April? The website says that transitional arrangements (13.3333 multiplier applied to TPs calculated under the old method) will apply to bookings with BA, Iberia and AA made prior to the announcement for travel after 1 April. It is silent as to what happens with bookings with other airlines.

Specifically, I booked a flight with Cathay Pacific in early December 2024 for travel in August 2025. TPs, if calculated under the new Club rules (percentage of miles flown), are significantly less (as percentage of thresholds for Silver & Gold) than under the previous Executive Club rules. So whether or not transitional arrangements apply will make a material difference.

I initially asked BA on Twitter/X and they confirmed that the transitional arrangements would apply to CX flights. I don’t necessarily think this is the most considered response so I also raised a query with BA via the website several times. Each time they have just replied with general information about the BA Club and have never actually answered my question on transitional arrangements (despite many follow-ups).

I can appreciate that it might require a manual claim as I suspect BA systems won’t be able to tell whether a booking with another carrier was made before or after 30 December. Would be very interested to know if anyone has any direct experience given the BA Club is now a couple of months old – or if anyone has actually received a useful answer from BA to this question.

    Many thanks in advance.

If you booked BEFORE the new club was announced then you ear as per the old rules (i.e. you will get a proportional number of nTPs using some multipler).

You seem to be worried that won’t happen, but there is nothing you can do other than wait and hope it all gets done correctly.

I’m currently waiting on a response from BA on this point too. I’d messaged on Twitter/X and received a very clear reply that my Royal Jordanian/Qatar flights, booked in November and flown in May, would have the multiplier applied. I was told it would need to be done manually and to get in touch after the flights.

I raised a request initially, again via X, and they passed it to the relevant team. I got a reply after a week titled ‘Missing Avios claim’ which said something like ‘I can see you have already received tier points and Avios for these flights and therefore nothing else is due’. I replied to explain that was not what I was after, set out the issue as clearly as I could with attachments, and received what sounds like a similar response to you – (probably AI written) nonsense with links to the website.

I then retried X, who suggested phoning. I spoke to two separate agents, and over a very frustrating hour, neither of them could begin to grasp what I was asking for.

I’ve now raised a complaint, attaching screenshots of the original Twitter/X messages, so will see what comes of that. I am not hopeful!

In the same boat as you with JL domestic First in September – intrigued to see what happens!

The FAQ at the time said there would not be any transitional arrangements for partner flights (other than AA/IB) – ie you will get the same TP for post 01/04 flights, irrespective of booking date:-

From 1 April 2025, flights marketed by American Airlines (AA) and Iberia (IB) earn tier points based on total eligible spend. You’ll also earn tier points for qualifying add-ons on flights marketed and operated by Iberia.

For flights marketed by oneworld or other air partners, you’ll earn tier points based on a percentage of how many miles you fly, as well as your booking class and the cabin you fly in, regardless of when it was booked.

There are no changes to how you collect Avios on our partner airlines.

Thanks, good to know, so if it credits per new rules you have no claim/dispute, I would personally credit elsewhere

I will certainly argue with BA over this – we shall see how successful I’ll be!

That is the general position re earning Tier Points with partner airlines. It doesn’t specifically address the question of the timing of booking however. There is additional more specific information re transitional arrangements, but it is silent on arrangements for partner airlines other than Iberia and AA:

“For flights booked before 13:00 GMT 30 December 2024 for travel from 1 April 2025, that are marketed by British Airways, American Airlines or Iberia, tier points will be awarded based on a conversion of the previous method.
This means any bookings you made, will earn proportionally the same number of tier points, or more, as expected when you booked.
Examples for flights booked before 13:00 GMT 30 December 2024 for travel after 1 April 2025
London Heathrow to New York booked in Economy (O class):
Before 1 April 2025, you would have earned 20 tier points each way
From 1 April 2025, we’ll convert this to 267 tier points each way
When you fly, you’ll earn tier points based on this converted amount, rather than eligible spend
London Heathrow to Madrid in Club Europe (I class)
Before 1 April 2025, you earn 40 tier points each way
From 1 April 2025, we’ll convert this to 534 tier points each way
When you fly, you’ll earn tier points based on this converted amount, rather than eligible spend
You’ll also earn tier points for any qualifying add-ons purchased as part of your trip.”
