Son is currently out in USA doing Camp America (not through them, through CCUSA). He has travel insurance included as part of the things they supply, and he has also extended that to cover camp set down, and a couple of days after, as his intention was to return pretty much straight home.

He has now decided he wants to travel for around 10 days afterwards (luckily I booked him an Avios flight and availability doesn’t seem to be a problem, so that should be relatively easy to change).

He is unable to extend the insurance coverage through CCUSA.

Am I right in thinking that if we take out a normal travel insurance policy now, it wouldn’t cover him because he’s already in America? Or am I completely over thinking this, and it would cover him?

He has no pre-existing medical conditions, but obviously he doesn’t want to take the chance of something happening as we all know medical bills can be ridiculous in USA (not really bothered about the other coverage you get with a policy, but medical coverage is key).

Just wondered if anyone has had a child in this situation/been in a similar situation themselves and has any suggestions. Thanks.

If you have a Google there will be some specialist options from battleface and the likes. They will likely have a wait period before any claims so buy it ASAP

Double check you don’t have any options in place with your bank accounts etc that would also cover a child

We do have bank account cover for us, but at 25 he’s too old to come under that unfortunately!

Just googled ‘short term travel insurance once at destination’ and the first hit was something called TrueTraveller – no idea how legit is but seems to be associated with AXA – but it clearly appears to be available. Seems to cover exactly your situation.

Thank you. I did find that after asking on here, but was keen to see if anyone had been in a similar situation and had personal recommendations.
