Forums Other Destination advice Two days in Melaka

  • 122 posts

We’re in Melaka for three nights/ two days in a few days time en route to Singapore. We failed miserably at eating delicious food and sightseeing in Penang and I’m keen to plan better for this bit.

    Any ideas/ experience/ suggestions welcomed!

Personally I loved Melaka – just incredibly chilled, good food easy to come by, and nice to walk around! Some ideas:

Eat chicken rice balls at Ee Ji Ban, delicious.
Jonker Street by day and by night for the night market.
    Cheap massages around Melaka Raya.
Baba and Nyonya Heritage House is worth a visit.
Make your own Cup Noodles at Mamee Jonker House.
Baboon House is supposed to be good although we didn’t make it there.
The Coffee Jar has great coffee.

We spent a couple of days in Melaka a few years ago and really enjoyed our stay. As some time back, can’t recommend any places to eat, but just wander around and you will find lots of places to eat and interesting shops. It’s so different from the rest of Malaysia. We travelled by bus – Singapore to Penang – and stopped for a couple of days. We stayed at the Holiday Inn which was slightly out of town, but walkable and had outside pool. Last time I looked, it was still there. From our room looking out to see we watched the ferry chug over to Indonesia belching out lots of black smoke. But it always seemed to make return journey safely!

    Both helpful replies, many thanks.

We’re currently in KL at The Majestic and the food in the hotel is so good that it will be a wrench to leave!

Ok.. in terms of food, our plan is to Pak Putra tonight, Big Baboon tomorrow afternoon, and Wild Coriander the next night.

We ate in the Portuguese Settlement a few years ago – sort of Malay Portuguese fusion. I don’t remember the name of the restaurant. Just beware some of the innards being offered in the steamboat type restaurants where you pick your own meat and vegetables on skewers to put in the broth in the middle. We did go to one last time but we’re very cautious as when we stayed in malacca in our backpacking days we asked what one of the things we had been served was and it translated to fallopian tubes😩😩

And by coincidence there is a rerun of an episode of Great Asian rail journeys set in Malaysia on BBC 2 tonight and Michael Portillo goes to Malacca and visits the Portuguese settlement.

    That’s not nice!

We did eat at Pak Putra – it was a decent curry with very good service and excellent naans. They were doing a roaring trade.
The Big Baboon was a winner. Very good fresh delicious food and drinks, lovely setting, great service.
Wild Coriander was pretty good laksa, lassi and Cendol.
    The winner was definitely Baboon
