Forums Hotel loyalty schemes IHG One Rewards Two IHG free night certificates

I have two IHG free night certificates. One expires in 3 weeks and the other the end of the year. If I use one of these to make a booking, how do I know which one is being used? The booking process does not seem to ask you which one you want to use. Does anyone have any experience of this?

I have no clue but if you cancel a free night cert booking I believe the cert goes straight back into your account. So if you book the night you are after and see what you have left that should guide you. If it uses the wrong one then just book using the remaining free cert and cancel the first booking.

But possibly wait until someone else endorses this strategy. And make sure that the rate you are booking doesn’t have some weird non-cancellable clause to it!

Worth noting that, based on recent reader experience, those IHG certs now seem to be valid at Mr & Mrs Smith with no exceptions. May have been a bug when they were reissued. I know a reader who booked a £700 room at Cliveden.

Never mind Cliveden, I’ve got a £795 studio suite booked at the Kimpton Seafire next July with mine!

The expiry date of the certificate is obvious when you go into your account – you need to click on it to redeem it so you know which one you’ve selected.

Thanks for the feedback. When you have two certificates, you click on a single button above the two certificate details and it’s not clear which one will be used. I’m going to check with IHG before proceeding.

Here is a question. I have a free night voucher that is about to expire and so does my brother. My brother has said he has absolutely no intention of using it and that I can have it. Is there anyway of booking a room with my voucher then booking a second night with my brothers voucher with my name on the reservation and combining?

Additionally, as a data point, I have found IHG always take the voucher with the least amount of time on it if you have more than one.

@Margarathea, I’ve had 2 certificates in my account and was able to see the expiry date on each one individually, both on the Creation credit card night and a certificate from an IHG offer. As I recall, you click on “2 free nights” in your account page and this takes you to a screen where each one is displayed separately. Sadly I have no unused certificates atm!

IHG have confirmed that the free night certificate with the closest expiry date will be used first.
