Forums Other London life Uber split fare scam

Today I received an Uber notification asking me to approve/decline that “Naya wants to split fare” with me. My share would be £0.2 (no typo).

    That’s a new for me.

Never having used the Split Fare feature, I looked it up. Seems all you need to provide is a phone number. Obviously the target also needs to accept the split, so the charge of success is low. So what’s the scam here?

Also, if I were Uber, I’d require that the two accounts were verified as geolocated close together before even sending the request.

    Request your ride
Tap to open the app and request a ride as you normally would.

Please note: you must have the latest version of the app to use the Split Fare feature.
    Make the split
Once requested, swipe up from the bottom of your app, tap your selected payment method, then tap Split Fare.
    Select your friends
Enter the names or phone numbers of other riders. Everyone you add is sent a notification request to accept your invitation

It does seem rather unambitious as scams go. I’m wondering if the person got the phone number wrong and it turned out to be @can2’s?

Usually these scams start with a minimal amount. If the victim happens to accept it, then they start increasing the amount. It was a test run I believe.

I spent quite a bit time on the app trying the turn off the feature — and couldn’t.

The reason I think it is a scam @NorthernLass is that I don’t think there can possibly be a £0.40 ride.

And @Rich_A yes it happened when I was in Kings Cross London. A busy and central location.

They might have taken a much more expensive ride and tried to split it with say 20 people. I don’t know never used the feature.

Does sound like a test run though.
