I am looking for a long weekend in February in a spa hotel anywhere in the UK.

My first thought is Schloss Roxburghe, especially as I have the Hyatt offer.

However, I’ve seen Luton Hoo, St George’s Park Hilton and others mentioned on HFP as good options too.

Does anybody have any particular recommendations around the above price point?

I am not sure what the above hotels are priced at but I thoroughly recommend Limewood in the New Forest.

Schloss Roxburghe is lovely, though you’d taking a risk on the weather for the outdoor pool and sauna cabin! We used both our Amex/Hyatt offers on 2 nights earlier this year so it was quite a bargain.

I think it’ll be a much more luxurious experience than St George’s Park, although you don’t say where you’re coming from, so might be less convenient. We added it to a stay in Northumberland but it’s rather remote if you’re going for a couple of nights from a fair distance away.

St George’s Park is an okay hotel, but not brilliant for a spa.

Wife has just come back from Hilton Harrogate and suggested that was very nice.

Harrogate is a really nice hotel (faded old-school glam interiors, if you like that sort of thing), but nowhere near the level of Schloss Roxburghe, and can be insanely overpriced and busy if they have a wedding on. Do they still have the separate charge to use the pool etc?!

The Doubletree Chester is similar in terms of accommodation and facilities – we had some good treatments there a couple of years ago.

You could visit the Turkish baths in Harrogate, of course. Obviously there’s a lot more to do in the immediate vicinity than Roxburghe as well, nice Everyman cinema and other things within walking distance.

The Gainsborough in Bath (SLH) has a fantastic spa facility and also not far from the other public spa places in Bath.

Grantley Hall and Rudding Park have good spa facilities and much better than the Hilton.

Rockliffe Hall and Seaham Hall have good reputations and Rockliffe now has James Close as ‘culinary director’ which can only be positive, the golf course is also excellent if that’s your thing.

Some great suggestions there. The Gainsborough in particular has perked my interest.

As nice as Grantley Hall is, it does appear to be in a different price bracket to the others mentioned, which are largely between £200 and £300 a night.

Incidentally, I would be coming from London, but a few hours on a train to Harrogate doesn’t sound too bad at all.

Any further suggestions to look at would be most welcome.

We stayed at the Ensana Buxton Crescent last year and had a very good stay. The spa is excellent. Also, right on my doorstep in the Burnley area, Crow Wood Hotel. The Woodland Spa there has won many awards and has just been refurbished.

I’m a big fan of Swinton Park Hotel in Yorkshire (a neighbour of Grantley Hall but 1/3 of the price). The hotel building is spectacular and the spa across the courtyard is very nice with a mix of inside and outside spaces. They also have a free range of activities (walks with gamekeepers, deer feeding etc) around the estate grounds. It’s obscenely picturesque.

They have some good restaurants in the grounds but if you want to head further afield you really need a car. Taxi availability can be a bit hit and miss for local runs although fine from mainline stations.

Eden Spa at Hoar Cross Hall, South Staffordshire. Between Lichfield and Uttoxeter.

We try and do a weekend spa break once a year and we also travel from London.

A few highlights for us (and all have been mentioned above):

    The Gainsborough in Bath (https://www.headforpoints.com/2016/12/13/my-review-of-the-gainsborough-bath-spa-hotel-the-best-uk-regional-city-hotel/)

    The Royal Crescent in Bath

    Sopwell House in St Albans

The first two we booked on Amex Plat FHR and got excellent room upgrades, used the credit on spa/dinner and enjoyed the excellent breakfast. Bath is also a lovely city to explore.

Sopwell House is a bit more secluded although not far from St Albans which as you’d expect, is perfect for a weekend visit.
