@Michael, I think that’s a good result and smart choices. I hope too that you can still use your remaining part of voucher for a future trip, ob the cheap from HK perhaps or indeed wherever possible that appeals. We still have a half voucher to use up to November 2024 from UK-HKG/XX. We miggt not be able to use it as 2024 is crammed for me, not totally happy if I cannot use it bit in the end it was still a good result getting HLG-EDI for 2 for 100k plus about £300 in J.
I only ever flew EVA once but it was about 20 years ago when I was still in London. I recall it was good and I was very happy with it. It was in PY and ai was curious to try as way back then PY was not so common and the EVA variant was a notch above others, and even the typical PY of today. O think EVA has since evolved to a more typical PY cabin like Virgin, BA etc these days but being an Asian carrier I think service may be better. Hope you enjoyed your trip, have a safe and pleasant journey home.
Living in the Midlands, it’s proving inconvenient to use companion vouchers.
Already lost one; another about to expire; don’t have much hope for another two. However, I somehow managed to get award flights with Qatar, BHX to DOH in J, and DOH to BKK in F. 150k each way per person.
Both Qatar flights were around a thousand times better than BA club world.
This has helped offset the uselessness of the companion vouchers (to me anyway).Looking forward to the return journey soon.
So yeah, don’t feel pressured into using a companion voucher.
@Aston100 well we don’t agree on much, but this idea that if you have a voucher you must keep banging the square peg into the round hole seems quite absurd. My wife would think I’m even madder than usual if she wanted to go to Thailand and I suggested that we had to do a self-connect via Bangalore or the ME with all costs, risks and complications of that because we happen to have some 241s. Having said that, with her recent experiences of BA’s execrable CW service, food/wine and absence of F cabins, I anticipate we will be going largely ex-BA relatively soon anyway.
Thanks, @BJ – last night at the Sheraton Grande Sukhumvit, cocktail
happy hour (lemongrass, chili & basil gimlet) in the lounge listening to some jazz.
Too civilised for words! On to tomorrow: any BKK Priority Pass/Amex lounge recommendations? Looks like
there are almost too many to choose from!@Michael, glad SGS continues to delight! I have a soft spot for Oman Air lounge? It was decent and very peaceful so hopefully it remains so. It accepts PP and is at the junction of gates E and G.
@Aston, @JDB. Unless your QR flights are coming up soon don’t hold your breath on F cabin. It’s only available on the a380s and they’re being withdrawn from service again. I cannot agree with the over-hyped service, products and food on QR. I’ve had great service on BA over the years, sure there has been some bad eggs but they’ve been few and far between. I don’t consider Qsuites significantly superior to Club Suite, if anything I’d probably say the latter fit me better. On flights with QR last year food was abysmal both from EDI and DOH. By contrast the steak I had on BA exHKG last month was the best I can remember having on a plane. None of the two cone even close to Japanese food on JAL, it was miles ahead. I’m not trashing either airline as overall I’ve been satisfied with both. It’s just that in nearly 40 years of flying I consider most airlines much the same. Sure there are differences but nothing IMO worth getting excited about and basing decisions on. I prefer to leave that to schedules, convenience and duration. I only drink water and sometimes coffee so wine etc is of no interest. The same for IFE, I prefer just to sleep as much of longhaul flights as possible. For that reason, best flat bed is probably my most important in flight requirement, AY Sofa Lounge being the best of contemporary business products in this respect IMO.

there are almost too many to choose from!In international departures? I went round a few of the Priority Pass lounges there last time, the Air France lounge was by far the best. As you say there’s a lot of choice, and some of them were not open when I was there.
If it’s domestic departures, the Coral lounge is reasonable.
@BJ I really like QR and J is fine, although I agree it’s overhyped and F not so much better. Recently went to OZ, three excellent QR sectors, last one was changed to Finnair, my first long haul flight with them that I thought was BA bad. The problem I have with BA is that the J cabins are twice the size of anyone else’s, yet they have fewer staff and an insufficient loo ratio (and don’t clean them inflight). Club Suites are great but they aren’t maintaining them, so that will be a growing problem and their introduction has led to a shrinking of the galleys (and not just on the A350) so they are no longer fit for purpose; the crew just can’t work effectively in them. This means that on 22.30ish departures like São Paulo or Cape Town it takes them an hour to bring you a drink and then another 45 minutes to bring truly filthy food and an age to clear when most people are wanting to sleep. It shouldn’t be like that, but anyway lesson learned, and Fortnum’s picnic now does the job. I don’t really order steak on planes since they stopped carving it at your seat some years ago!
However, unless you want to go to Singapore I’d recommend HKG to cut costs, particularly if you have enough avios to book as one ways and do reore calling to appky tge voucher and get a refund. I’d only pick SIN over HKG if your ultimate destination was DPS or HKT which are a bit further from HKG than SIN.
Can I ask the advantage of booking 2 x 1 ways. Is that the 355days reason or am I missing a way to save some actual £.
Thanx
Hey @squishsquash – pretty sure it’s to do with taxes and hence a way to save actual £ … I’m sure one of the brains on the forum will confirm!
Keen to know myself the specifics of this as having just got back this morning from a two stop trip to Singapore and Bali I’m literally planning my next trip out East 🙂 …
@Gavin, thanks for posting on AF lounge. I didn’t know they tookk PP so will give it a try on a future trip.
@JDB, not a fan of steak either but sometimes it’s only suitable choice for me. Interesting on maintenance og CS. My partner only told me last week that the door wouldn’t close on his during our flight from HK last month. Had he told me that at the time I would have added it to my complaint about the schedule changes and domestic downgrade on said trip. Talking about service on that trip (a350 from HKG) the FA were fine but now I recall one weird thing. They were very reluctant( actually refused, to serve/pour water! Each time I asked I was told I had been given a bottle of water and I could have another if I wanted. I was given an empty glass and expected to pour it from the bottle myself. If it had not been an overnight flight and I’d not been so keen to get to sleep I’d likely have had words about that. Mu usual mindset across J on all airlines is that I’m just relieveved to be sitting in J for 8+h and not down the back so that’s why I’m nit too fussed about differences in J between carriers. About half of our flights going forward will likely be on QR.@Squihsquashi, @Tygerbright – yes, the co-payment continues to remain cheaper is HKG is booked as 2x one way provided the returns are booked online and then manually adjusted by a CSA. The context is generally related to T-355 but it does not have to be. Two one ways has the further advantage of extra flexibility but at the expense of additional potential £35 fees.
