My wife and I are Silver Status with Virgin
We are looking at a one-way flight LHR to MIA either Premium Economy or Upper and want to know the best way of using the voucher.
Premium Economy is 45,000 points and £800 fees for 2 of us
Upper Class is 95,000 points and £1260 in fees for the 2 of us
How do we work this to max use of the voucher please?
The above also in mind……
– we live nr Bristol so have to travel to LHR to fly out and then we get off a cruise in Southampton (so have fiddly transport issues)
– what voucher options would there be to go from a European airport where we could fly to from Southampton (if we drove there first)
Thank You !!
Should be that you pay:
£1,260 (UC taxes)
45,000 miles (PE miles)
The voucher therefore equal to the saving of miles (50,000)
There must be both availability (PE and UC) on the flight (I think…)
I’m reading this as you want to use the voucher to fly LHR-MIA where you will be joining a cruise, which ends in Southampton? Is the European option in addition to this, or instead of? It’s not very clear whether you’re talking about 2 separate trips. I don’t think there would be an option to use the voucher from a European city though, as they have to be used on Virgin so you are stuck with their route network.
Thank You – that’s what I thought – a saving of 50,000 points if using a Voucher
For a one-way daytime flight I could cope in Premium Economy
So, with Economy Classic costing 25,000 points and £440 in fees, how would we use the voucher to Premium Economy (or even UC).
I think we can upgrade as we’re Silver Status

No, the European option wouldn’t work as cant use the voucher.
Amazingly, a flight from Rome to Miami in Upper Class is £120 in fees for 2 – but £1,260 for 2 from LHR
That was one reason for looking at Europe for the main leg.
BUT looks like we will fly LHR-MIA, get cruise back to Southampton and then a coach to LHR to collect the car.
FCO-MIA isn’t actually Upper at all – it’ll be an equivalent marketed as Upper (e.g. DL One, maybe whatever ITA are offering…), unless it’s trying to route you via LHR using a AFKL within Europe, which would be weird. Double check (the website will tell you) which aircraft you’re on – Upper on an A351 is much better than a 789.

I think there’s some confusion here as to the two ways you can use these vouchers – either as a 2-4-1 or an upgrade. Any voucher holder can upgrade from one class to the next provided there is reward availablity in both (e.g. economy to premium or premium to upper), irrespective of status. Where silver status makes a difference is that you can use the voucher as a 2-4-1 on a redemption in Upper Class rather than a 2-4-1.5 (i.e. if silver or above you pay only 1 set of reward points for 2 people whereas simple red members must pay another 50% of the points for the second pax).
As you’re going one way only, it likely makes sense for you to use the voucher to upgrade two people (unless you have another use for ‘half’ a voucher before it expires and want to travel UC – then you should consider using only half of it on a 2-4-1 basis as you are Silver).
If you decide to go PE instead then the upgrade will cost you 2 x points for economy plus 2 x the taxes for PE (e.g. 25,000 pts + £440).
Of course only you can decide which offers the best value for you. Lots on here will moan about the ‘old-style’ seats in UC on the older VS metal (787) but I’d still prefer it to a PE recliner seat. If your travel options are on the Airbus Neo then I’d definitely go for UC.
If you want to read up more on the voucher variables (they can also be used on cash tickets too) then there are some good articles on here:
