Forums Frequent flyer programs The British Airways Club Upgrade BA Amex card – keep current cpending to date?

  • 13 posts

    Hello

I currently have a free (blue) British Airways Amex card and am looking to upgrade to the paid (black) British Airways Amex card.

Will I keep the £2,500/£12,000 I have currently spent towards the companion voucher after upgrading?

So, essentially, when I upgrade to the paid card will I start on £2,500/£10,000 or £0/£10,000? I think it is the first option but thought I would double check before planning the yearly big spends etc.

Yes. You will keep the spend to date after upgrade to BAPP.

Yes. You will keep the spend to date after upgrade to BAPP.

Really? So spend £9,990 on free card, upgrade for the companion voucher, then downgrade again for essentially no fee?

    Theoretically yes can be done.

Though Amex are under no obligation to allow you to downgrade, I think there have been some reports of people be declined downgrades recently. So you may be left with having to keep or cancel the card. Which in itself not necessarily an issue, see threads / articles on rules regarding the 241.

They might also not look favourably on such behaviour, see threads re referrals for evidence of Amex possibly tightening up their wider practices.

Personally, I wouldn’t do it, but am sure others do. Depending on your annual amex spend the additional Avios earning rate may sweeten the equation of holding the BAPP.
