Forums Payment cards Barclaycard Avios Upgrade Barclaycard Avios

When it first launched, I got myself a Barclaycard Avios Plus card. I spent the requisite cash on it, got my Cabin Upgrade Voucher and subsequently downgraded it to avoid the £20 fee. I now have a Barclaycard Avios card.

Yesterday, I got told that the new year has started.

If I upgrade it in the app (assuming it’ll let me; haven’t yet looked), do I get a new year starting when I upgrade (or is it the same year for the purposes of voucher collection)? I assume upgrading will lower the threshold I require.

It’s easy for me to hit the threshold, so I’d rather take the lower threshold, and therefore take the least hit of £20/mo. charges personally. Once the voucher’s back with me, I’ll revert it to the free card. Rinse and repeat.

It’s not clear how often people will be allowed to upgrade/downgrade. I downgraded without any issues and currently have an offer to change back to the paid card, but I’m happy enough with the free one as I can earn a voucher each year without paying a monthly fee.

Depending on how much you can spend, you could trigger the voucher at £10k on the paid card, then if you downgrade successfully again you could immediately start earning a new one, if past experience is anything to go by.

    Worked that way for me.
