Forums Payment cards American Express Upgrade BA Blue Amex to BAPP questions

  • 78 posts

I am currently have the free BA card. The card anniversary date was in June. Im now thinking to upgrade it to BAPP so hope to trigger the 241 voucher.

I think i have seen some previous comments here that 1) the new BAPP anniversary date will be reset based on the upgrade date, eg due in Aug instead of June.

    2) Also the overall spend on the free card (after anniversary date) will also wipe off and reset to zero for BAPP.

Hopefully someone can advise so that i can timing it properly for the BAPP. TIA

I don’t think the anniversary date changes, nor does the spend to date get wiped of you do as an upgrade. I upgraded shortly before I had completed a £10k spend and everything held for me.

The only way to change your card anniversary date is to cancel and reapply. Upgrading from Blue to BAPP maintains the original card anniversary. As does downgrading.

All spend incurred during the year counts so if you spend £9k on the blue card and then upgrade to BAPP you only need to spend a further £1k to get the companion voucher.

Glad to hear that. I can nos timing it properly to get the necessary spend towards it.

    Thanks for the advice

Be aware you won’t necessarily get Amex to allow this, there have been reports of people being turned down since they started tightening everything up.

I’ve done some upgrades/downgrades recently on this card and thought they won’t allow this – here’s my timeline. The original date of January when I signed up showed up all times.

    1) BAPP – Signed up and the 70k in January, downgraded once 70k points were in
    2) Downgraded to BA Basic Card and stopped using it. Didn’t want to take the credit hit of cancelling all together
    3) Upgraded back to BAPP in July as I didn’t realise my mistake in the 241 voucher, hit the £10k and got my 241 voucher credited to BA account
    4) Downgraded back to BA Basic Card soon as the £10k hit (i’m now on the Gold card now)
    5) Got a small refund and now says I need to spend £2,010 to get the free companion voucher before January

I’m now wondering whether it’s worth spending the £2,010 on the free BA card and seeing if a free companion voucher will also post alongside the Premium 241 voucher received already this year. Downgraded via Chat every time btw and I know i’m really pushing my luck here!

Is it really worth all that hassle and black marks with AMEX? Play silly games, win silly prizes!

@pushkar don’t push your luck. You won’t earn a second voucher in one year. Anyway what’s the point as it would only be usable on economy seats.

@AJA Good point – the free voucher is useless and so no need to upset Amex. I suspect I wouldn’t have got this far had I not had previous ‘good’ Amex history over the years.
