I downgraded my BAPP to the basic card at the start of the year when my renewal was due, with the intention of closing it once it had been used to pay for the 241 trip that had been earned on it.
However I have now decided to stick with the BA Amex and wanted to re-upgrade it back to a BAPP but was told no by Amex CS, possibly because it looks like I was trying to game it by saving on the fee but that was not my intention.
Do I have any options besides cancelling and applying a-fresh? I don’t want to reset my annual spend and would have been ok with them backdating my annual fee to when it should have been due at the start of the year, but wasn’t even given that option.
On a web browser, first logon to your Amex account. Then try this link:

I used this link a week ago to upgrade from the free BA card (without talking to an agent via phone or chat) and was accepted immediately no problem…
Good luck!
Wow! Straight in and approved!
Thanks very much for that. Wonder why CS said they couldn’t do it?
There have been other accounts of being turned down, so I suspect they just haven’t realised this route still works. Probably one to keep quiet about!
I am planning to upgrade to get the 2 year validity on the voucher.
Is the pro rata refund finished or finish before 1st Nov 2024
End to pro rata refund has been paused, but can go live anytime.
@Alesio You want the benefit … pay the fee.
It’s things like this that makes the fees higher for us all
@Kuestrian you can pay with any Amex in anyones name. There was no need to keep the free card in fact you potentially cost yourself a sign up bonus in a years time by doing that.
Tenuously linked to the thread topic, has anyone ever had an ‘offer’ for upgrading from the basic BA Amex to BAPP?
@phantomchickenz earlier this year I was offered 3k avios when upgrading. I wasn’t even expecting anything so all good.
Bizarrely, a friend tried to upgrade last month and they were offered 8k to stay with the free card (as long as they spent £3k in 3 months).

Did they offer it before or after you said you wanted to upgrade?
I’ve just cancelled the basic card. There was no attempt to keep me or offer any incentive to stay. I had been considering upgrading the card but the increased spend to get a 241 had put me off. I may reconsider in a couple of years if there are sign up incentives but by then I will be retired so may not qualify. Will probably blow my Avios on a Qatar biz flight and then enjoy hunting down cheap cash flights. No more loyalty for me — go with best option that suits me going forward. Sounds like an exciting brave new world has opened up. Just need to get my head round the best ways to search.

After! Hence my surprise, as I didn’t ask for it at the start of the call. The CSR said something like “I see that you have been with Amex X years so we’ll be offering this one off”.
