Forums Payment cards Barclaycard Avios Upgrade voucher issued with less than 2 years expiry

  • 13 posts

I recently got an upgrade voucher from Barclays on the anniversary of my Premier current account. I logged in to my BA account today to check-in for a flight when something about the voucher caught my attention.

The voucher was issued on 27 Sep 2023 with an expiry date of 1st Aug 2025, which makes the voucher validity 22 months instead of the usual 24 months. In the past, all upgrade vouchers I have received from Barclays whether for Premier current account or for spending £10k on Avios Plus credit card had exact 24 months validity. Is this an error on BA’s side or is this the new validity that BA has quietly implemented? Has anyone noticed this about their recently issued vouchers?

Sorry to bump this. Can someone help please.

I too earned an upgrade voucher after the anniversary of joining avios rewards, which was issued on 5th October, and mine also has an expiry date of 1st August 2025.

Not sure who to complain to tbh, but I’ll probably redeem in 2024, so should be fine, but if I don’t use it by then, will need to sort it out, as it expires before I likely will be able to use it in summer 2025.

Same issue – 1 August 2025. I have been fobbed off by 2 BA chat agents and Barclays insists that BA is in full control of the voucher generation including the expiry date field.

I have now filed a complaint as the only way of resolving this. Not a good look for BA but arguably a worse look for Barclays that customers getting these vouchers are having to fight through wades of computer-says-no just to get BA to do what it is supposed to do.

I checked my recent upgrade vouchers after coming across this thread and I am in the same boat with 2 of my vouchers expiring on 01/08/25. I am currently outside UK but will call BA to check what’s going on with my vouchers once I am back. Thanks for creating this thread, which made us find out this issue. 👍🏻

Perhaps 1 Aug 2025 is the latest date on the vouchers as this is the date BA Avios and Barclays are planning to part ways?? Complete speculation on my part, obviously!

Whilst it might be true that BA control the issuance of the voucher, Barclays is the one that formed an agreement with the customer and provided the current account, which states you get a voucher with 24 months validity if the customer pays a fee for 12 months. So Barclays should have some responsibility over what is delivered. Not sure they can completely pass on the responsibility to their ‘supplier’ JDB might be able to confirm.

Prompted me to check as I have 1 in my account- issued 28/06/23, expires 28/06/25, so sounds like a recent issue only.

Is clear in the BA terms is 24 months since date of issue, mine isn’t due until next month and was hoping to keep them for at least summer 25 if not October 25. As it’s a packaged account it may be a breach of their terms, so is it worth a complaint to financial ombudsman? As you were unable to use one of the account’s features to full as the terms and conditions state 24 months.

My latest voucher has issue and expiry date Sep 2nd 2025 so it does look like some kind of recent glitch with BA adding them to people’s accounts.

    expiry date Sep 2nd 2025

That’s quite some glitch. My voucher posted on 6 October, expiry 1 Aug 2025. Now (??) it’s up to 2 September. On this trajectory people will be getting vouchers for 24+ months.

That’s what I expected, voucher issued Sep 2nd, so expiry date is 2 years in the future? That’s the normal voucher validity.

All very weird. Mine was awarded today (for the bank account) and its expiry is 1 August 2025. Hopefully it will be tweaked in due course as there is a chance I may wish to use it with next year’s one for flights in September 2025 for my dear old ma and her pal.

    Missed that bit.

I’m in a similar boat to people here. My voucher was issued on the 6th Oct, but the expiry shows 1st Aug 2023.

Anyone managed to get that changed to the correct expiry date?

I have complained to Barclays as the ultimate duty of care is with them. They tried twice to fob me off onto BA.

I also raised the issue with BA who fobbed me off in spectacular style by misunderstanding the nature of my complaint – telling me that data protection considerations prevented them accessing the information held about Barclays customers.

They won’t take notice until more people complain.

I imagine that most people in this situation are thinking that dealing with Barclays and BA (neither exactly being known for their exemplary customer service or IT prowess) to try and get this fixed will be a Sisyphean task and are therefore praying someone else might engage and it will then be magically fixed for all.

I’m taking the view that I can leave it for now as I may have cause to use the voucher well before its expiry and won’t need to chase. But I might need the full two years so thank you @lesscleverandrew

I received an email from Barclay’s today, 16th October, saying I’d received, or would receive another voucher from the Premier Bank account. Logged into BA account and noticed firstly that the voucher was dated 10th September, speedy Barclays systems, and like others the expiry date was 1st August 2025.
I’ll call Barclays at some point in the next few days, and then when they fail to understand or deal with it I’ll make a formal complaint. Hopefully a few £££ for my trouble.
They’re really a very poor CS bank, and I’m not sure anyone would bother with them if they didn’t want Avios and the voucher. Every single interaction with them from opening the account has been difficult, and the messages to contact them, which then turn out to be fishing trips for sales of other products really annoy.

Thanks all. I got a bit busy at work, so couldn’t follow-up on this thread I created. It saddens me to hear that so many of you are in the same situation.

Seems like @lesscleverandrew has been on Barclay’s case ever since he found about it. I will also give them a call tomorrow to raise my concerns and lodge a formal complaint.

I have now raised the issue with BA twice.
The first time they said they were not allowed to access the details of Barclays customers – irrelevant to the complaint.
The second time, now, BA said they would investigate the complaint into my “Companion” voucher. Words fail me.

Same issue here. Voucher issued today, but expiry is 1st August 2025.

This has happened to me too. Both BA and Barclays have told me that they would get the date corrected but so far nothing has happened. Has anyone here managed to get the date corrected yet?

Side question, how long has it taken for the premier account anniversary voucher to appear in your BAEC? Does it appear at the next billing cycle?

    Many Thanks.

The credit card ones at least have always been pretty quick for me – the last one within 24 hours of selecting it in the Barclays app!

I opened my account on the 1st of October and both years it has been issued, and dated 9th October.
