Upgrading Gold to Plat but travelling – Can I use the gold still towards my SUB?

Looking at upgrading gold to Plat but wont be around to get the new Plat card as will be abroad. Was wondering if I continued to spend on the Gold would that count towards my spending target to hit my sign up bonus? I appreciate the new card will have a different number but I seem to remember reading someone did something similar and both “accounts” were merged into the new plat once the gold thumbnail changed to a plat one on the app.

Anyone have any insight please?

Yes that was my experience @Roberto. I’ve just done likewise and the card switched to a platinum one in the app the next day – I assume that’s when the new product was live (it was also showing Platinum benefits on the app eg 24k MR for referrals, plat travel benefits etc). I also got an email welcoming me to Plat.
My physical card arrived 2-3 days later but I could (& still can 2 weeks later) use the old gold one. Account number & PIN has remained unchanged (cvv is only thing that’s different)

Is there still any type of reward for upgrading in terms of points since the promotion seem to finish or did you just do it for the other benefits?

I’ll second Degsy’s comments. Upgrade was pretty much immediate, I could continue to use my old card whilst waiting for the one to arrive and the only things to change on the new card were the CVV and the expiry date.

Pa. You’ll get a metal card instead of a plastic one.

I’m in the same situation but due to travel in ~2 weeks. Would my current unpaid bill on the Gold (~£3000 and due next month) count towards the spending target for plat if paid once the new card arrives?

It should be fairly self evident that spend incurred on the gold card prior to the upgrade will not count towards the Platinum SUB and that when you pay your bill for old charges is also irrelevant for the SUB.

Ha yes thought so, wishful thinking on my part!

I’m assuming any saved offers won’t be transferred across too – I have a Hilton stay this weekend to trigger £50 off offer on the Gold, so will need to activate the plat shortly after that.

@HJ my wife’s gold offers (saved & unsaved) did transfer when she did the upgrade last month, but it sounds as though you may be safer to wait a few days to be sure. Everything in the app stayed the same except the card colour – same card number, transactions just roll on etc. but metal card arrives in post. One thing people have mentioned is that if you have supplementary cardholders, the first gets added automatically so you wouldn’t have the opportunity of points for adding one. May be worth removing supps (but only 1 free now on Plat) now then adding after upgrade.

Ah that’s good to know, think I’ll wait until the weekend just to be safe.
