Forums Payment cards American Express Upgrading Gold to Platinum and then downgrading

  • 1 post

I’ve had the gold card for a few years and I’m very happy with it, but I got an upgrade offer and I’m curious. I kinda feel like I might not be able to get enough value out of the platinum card but it’d be fun to try. I just don’t want to risk losing my gold card, the age of it on my credit report, etc.

Does anyone know whether it would be possible to accept the upgrade offer, do the qualifying spend, get the points, have the card for a while, and then downgrade to gold?

I’d be happy enough to downgrade after a year (no prorata), but I’m also wondering if I would receive a prorata refund if I downgraded?

    Any risks? Downsides?

It’s perfectly possible to upgrade and then downgrade. Assuming you haven’t done it before recently and you don’t plan to repeat it.
Prorata refund is possible now, but Amex could stop that soon.

They don’t have to offer a downgrade to gold they may only offer a downgrade to green

    Green’s no more. ARCC then.

Green are still issued as downgrades for the charge cards, retention thread has offers in the past few weeks.

I assumed as the OP had the gold a few years it would be charge but that might be incorrect on my part.
