Upgrading inbound flight from PE to CW after flying outbound? Not given option

Hi all,

I booked a return flight that departed in April 2022 and I returned home using a one way ticket on an alternative airline

The second leg for this return flight (BA flight) is booked in Feb 23 and was booked in PE. I’d like to upgrade it to CW using avios and can see there is availability, however, when I visit manage my booking, it only allows me to change seat and provides no option to upgrade.

Is this because I can’t upgrade inbound flight after the outbound has been flown? Or do I just need to do this over the phone?

FWIW I’ve had flights that were upgradeable but weren’t recognised as such in MMB, had to call BA to do it.

If it was a cash booking direct with BA and the flight is showing CW reward availability I’d just try calling.
