Hi, if I am flying from PHL to Budapest via LHR where do i collect my luggage to take through customs? I am hoping it will be Budapest. I didn’t want to mess with luggage until Budapest and now with the upcoming strikes I really don’t want to mess with getting into any queues other than to get on the next flight! Thanks

Is your trip all on one booking/PNR? If so, you should be able to check your luggage through to BUD.

HI, yes, travelling CHS PHL LHR BUD so i was hoping it would go straight through. I know going the other way arriving in US it is the first “port of call” so to speak that luggage is checked. Just wanted to ensure the luggage would go straight through . Many thanks 🙂

I understand your caution, given the US approach – the lack of a “transit” option there has also caught many people out. In the vast majority of cases, Europe and worldwide other than the USA, you can check baggage through to your final destination.

There are exceptions: flights are on more than one booking and operator will not interline, land transfer between airports on the way (e.g. Heathrow to London City or Gatwick), final airport has no Customs presence (highly unlikely on a commercial booking) to name a few.

Your trip, to a major EU airport on a single PNR, should be fine!

Thank you for the information – seems like I need not worry about having to go through customs at LHR going or coming back – only in the US (PHL) outbound and in Budapest on the return leg. Many thanks all

You will have to do security at LHR though, which you wouldn’t have to at any other Schengen transit airport
