Forums Payment cards Barclaycard Avios Using Barclaycard upgrade voucher for return leg from Miami

  • 3 posts

    Hi
I want to book from London to Miami return and use my upgrade voucher for my husband and I for the return leg but when I try to book it says I don’t have enough upgrade voucher for both of us. There doesn’t seem to be a way of specifying that I want to use it for both of us for return only. If it try to just book a return from Miami one way it says I can’t use the voucher for flights that are not from the UK, so I’m a bit stuck as to how to use my voucher for return leg only. Can anyone advise or do I have to call BA?

You will need to call BA for them to do it

I think you need to use each voucher for a one person return. The t and c s don’t allow one ways from overseas

I’m afraid the voucher won’t enable you to do what you want here: travel with the voucher must start in the UK so you can’t apply it to just an inbound leg.
You can book return tickets, but as @HampshireHog says it’s one voucher per person return. If you have 2 vouchers it’s important not to use one to upgrade both of you outbound as you will then have the problem you currently face times two.

The voucher can be used as the OP wishes but if requires a call to BA and for the outbound and return to be booked at the same time. The term about origination in the UK applies to the overall trip, not the individual flight. Thus if two people have only one voucher they can elect which leg to upgrade.

    That, I did not appreciate.
But I assume the overall journey has to be BA, not any other carrier departing the UK, ie Iberia, AerLingus or AA(code share.)

@Mikeact – yes to use the Barclays voucher, it needs to be on BA mainline, EuroFlyer or CityFlyer although some have occasionally reported issues with the latter two. Although it isn’t explicitly precluded to use a different carrier in the non upgraded leg, I think it wouldn’t work so the whole booking needs to be BA.

Thanks. Would the outbound have to also be a regular Avios redemption, or could I pay cash out, voucher back ? Couple of other ?’s, out to Boston, return, with voucher from eg Miami ? Book a separate BA ticket, one way. And a further voucher ticket return, ie two separate tickets ? Apologies.

Thanks @JDB. Opens up other options.

Don’t think you can mix cash one way and reward the other on one booking in any circumstances, but the voucher terns say ‘when you make a reward flight booking’ anyway. One way long haul cash fares are lots of £££ so forget that idea.

As has been covered above the voucher booking must originate in the UK, so can be one way outbound from the UK but not one way inbound. You can certainly do an open jaw return LHR – BOS & MIA – LHR, upgrading either leg for two people with one voucher. Would need to be booked over the phone.

This. The trip would have to be on one PNR, originating in the U.K., and would then be eligible to have either sector upgraded for 2 pax.

I would personally upgrade on the outbound and enjoy the experience while awake, but I appreciate that some people prefer to sleep in CW on an overnight flight!

Thanks everyone for your response. I might wait until we have two vouchers and then do outbound and return as upgrades for both of us, otherwise it seems I’ll have to call BA if I only want to use on the return. Good to have that clarified.

Don’t forget there will need to be avios seats available in the cabin you want to travel in, though MIA availability doesn’t seem too bad these days, except at peak periods.

I have a related question to the ones discussed in this thread. I wanted to book an ex U.K. return flight for one using the upgrade voucher. Popular dates/routes so I booked the outbound 355 days in advance. When the inbound opened up I missed out on booking business or premium and have just booked economy inbound so that the person is at least on the same plane as the rest of us.

If in due course premium opens up (or indeed business), has anyone had any success in getting BA over the phone to apply the voucher on the inbound leg for one person given the delay between booking outbound as a one way and then adding the inbound?

It’s not clear whether you managed to get this on one PNR, if so, then possibly if you get a sympathetic agent, if no then almost certainly not as it would be a standalone booking originating outside the UK.

Thanks Northernlass. It was two separate bookings, and you have confirmed my suspicions that the answer is no.

    Good luck with your travels.

    A related question:

If I want to book a return open-jaw flight for two people utilising two vouchers, but i want to book the first leg before the return legs are released, how should i book that first leg. Should I use two vouchers to book the singles for 2 people or just the one voucher.

I know I’m going to need to call to get the return flight added, but wondered whether just using the one voucher option would not let the call agent add the second flight (using the 2nd voucher) as they would say i am in effect trying to use the voucher on a flight not from the UK.

My plan had been, having spoken to BA, make two bookings for the outbound, each using a voucher.

When the return opens up, call to have the agent make the inbound booking (again, on a per person basis) and use the voucher.

@TonyLon book one voucher per person. You have correctly identified the issue people have reported if using one voucher for two people on their ex-UK flight.

Assume this means that I would end up with two separate booking reference numbers – one for each passenger?
