Hi all,
I’m currently look at options to fly to Toronto in April 2025 and have a few options I’d like to get advice from people on.
I have 1x 241 BAPP voucher and 2x Barclays voucher. My ideal traveling classes are outbound LHR to YYZ in PE and return from YYZ to LHR in J. I’ve run some scenarios outlined below:
Using 1x BAPP in PE/J: 145750 + £714
Using 2x Barclays PE/PE: 114000 + £640 – I can’t split these and book the outbound in J as my flight doesn’t originate in the UK
Using 1x cabin out PE + 1 BAPP in J: 151500 + £705 – these are booked separately and presumably I can use the other ‘half’ of the BAPP elsewhere for a flight departing the UK before the voucher expires?
Is there something else I’m missing?
Is this for 2 people?
Your option 3 doesn’t totally make sense so it’s hard to comment.
I would try and use whichever voucher expires first. Also, can you not use the 2 Barclays vouchers to make 2 return bookings?
Yes it’s for two people
Option 3 would be two one way outbound using one Barclays voucher to upgrade from economy to premium economy. And the BAPP voucher to book two one way business class journeys from Toronto to London.
I can’t use the two Barclays vouchers to get outbound PE and return J because it doesn’t give me the option to do that online. I can’t book them separately as I can’t start my journey from outside the uk
Why can’t you call BA and ask them to book you in your preferred cabins with the 2 upgrade vouchers? They’d probably be able to put both vouchers on the same booking as well.
Thanks @NorthernLass I called BA and the agent was super helpful.
Turns out that using the Barclays upgrade voucher in PE out and CW back was working out 178,500 avios + £714 vs using the 241 companion voucher in PE out and CW which was 145,750 avios + £714! I’ve therefore booked using the 241.
TBH, I struggle to see where I’m going to get decent value from the upgrade vouchers, I’ll probably choose the avios option next time.
Is one or both of your travel dates in the Easter holidays?
The upgrade voucher is best used off-peak as the peak rates you’re upgrading from can be very high, e.g. upgrading to CW to MIA, for example, will cost you 2 x the PE fare which at peak rate is 60k avios each way. Fly off-peak and you’re only paying 47,500 avios each way.
Upgrading Y to PE to JFK off-peak will only cost you 25k avios each way. It is harder to get good value, but I’ve always made good use of mine when cash fares have been high, e.g. CW to DXB on one of the last off-peak days in December when cash prices were starting to go through the roof.
I’m afraid so, yes. My wife is a teacher although works part time so we can be a little flexible where we can. Our outbound will be off-peak but return is peak. I keep telling myself over the medium term, we’ll save a fortune in kids clubs etc. over the school holidays in future as she’ll be off with them!
Ah that is good to know, I’ll save it for another mat leave when we can travel term time.
+1 for what NorthernLass says.
I’ve managed to use 3 x Barclays vouchers for 3 people to JFK return on 1 booking and 1 x BAPP for 2 people on the same flight on another booking. (I’m on the BAPP voucher booking).
This gave me the same value as 2 x BAPP for 5 people on a single booking and is the best use I can make of the Barclays vouchers.
If you are gold you can also call up afterwards and they will apply Gold benefits to the other booking for seat selection, which is handy.
