I’m BA Silver/OneWorld Sapphire and have been forced to abandon BA in favour of Lufthansa for a flight in November. I’m flying to and from the US out of Denmark with family, and Lufthansa timings and prices were better than BA. However, as someone who has become accustomed to having free seat selection, it hurts me to have to pay a fortune for the three of us to get good seats – and there aren’t many left! I’ve seen that Lufthansa are generally disinclined to match status, but might another Star Alliance airline do it, which could then benefit me on Lufthansa? I know there’s sometimes also something to be gained from hotel loyalty, so for what it’s worth, I’m Hilton Diamond. Any suggestions?
Not aware of any active direct Star Alliance status matches. There’s a convoluted way of getting United Premier Platinum but you have to first status match Marriott Titanium or above to United, then contact United asking for a once per ‘lifetime’ trial of Premier Plat which then lasts 4 months.

Yes. Don’t pay.
Every day tens and tens of thousands of people fly without ever paying a penny to select seats. Not because they have status so don’t have to but because they see no need to.
Save those seet fees and pay for other flights that will eventually get you LH status.

Well, I wouldn’t if it were just me. Unfortunately, my brother has reasons for wanting extra leg room and such, and if there is a way to make it happen through status matching, then I will. If there isn’t, then I won’t. I just thought it was worth asking – especially for such a long flight.
Anyone still hoping to book an award to the USA using Lufthansa Miles, they’ve just done a British Airways and massively hiked the surcharges you’ll have to pay in cash on top of the same miles.
Lufthansa, Austrian, and Swiss mentioned just done it. Increased cash from over 100 euros to well over 200 euros more these airlines want for the same ticket.
Cash can be kept to less if you opt for a more expensive type of award requiring a chunk more miles apparently.
I should have known LH had some bad news coming when I saw all the LH Worldshop promotions they mailed last month 🙁
You should be able to get 120 day Status Match from United (if you haven’t done it before). Not sure if it gives free seat selection on LH, probably should, but not too familiar with Star Alliance.
