I am 100% certain that I usually call BA when I know the date of my return flight when using a 241 companion voucher. I must’ve redeemed over 10 vouchers this way in the past, either that or I’m totally confused! Just called them and they said if I book a departure without a return flight using the voucher then the voucher is only valid for the departure flight and is now useless? I have another voucher in my account which is how I could see the extra CW availability but if I’m mistaken, please let me know. I am so sure that all I did in the past was to ring them up and get a new ticket with a return date. Again I don’t know my return flight date so if I use my current voucher then I’ll be in the same position.
I’ve only ever done this when the return leg is currently out of range – ie still more than 355 days away so not yet on sale. Either by calling to add the return leg or booking it separately online.
It is quite plausible that they will not let you do it when both legs are available at the time of booking the outbound, and you just haven’t made up your mind on a return date.
@LarsVG – what the agent advised you was technically correct per the terms of the voucher but hasn’t been the practice for at least a decade so I think you were just unlucky in getting a grumpy and/or poorly trained agent, so calling again may resolve the issue.
Thanks for your replies. I will attempt one more call but as you mentioned, I am in the wrong on this occasion and will have to suck it up! 😩
Apologies if this has been asked, I have looked through forum but need to double check.
I managed to book outbound LHR-TOK using 2-4-1 voucher. The return flight date I would like to book is released later this week & I wanted to check the following:
– if I login at midnight will I see reward flight availability if I don’t have another voucher? I’m assuming no
– is my only option to try to Skype US number before midnight to try to get the return flights?
Thank you

Please read Rob’s reference article, and this very long thread https://www.headforpoints.com/forums/topic/booking-return-leg-with-companion-voucher/page/50/
My understanding is that having the voucher allows one to see “extra” availability. The usual availability i.e. what someone can see without a voucher should be visible when the flights become available.
