Forums Frequent flyer programs Virgin Flying Club Using Virgin reward voucher for someone else

  • 21 posts

Is it possible to use my flying club reward voucher to upgrade another person’s flight, or to book a flight for another couple (e.g. my partner and his mom) without me travelling on the booking?

If it is relevant, I am only a red member with flying club.

Answers on the forum suggest that this is possible, but not sure if it is still the case after the changes in late 2024.

Also wanted to see if it makes a difference if the people I wish to book for are on the same household account as me.

No. If you had Silver or Gold status you could transfer it to another person, but you don’t.

Sadly not unless you are gold, which is a shame.

Is this a post October 2024 change? I saw some people with success booking for others in the past.

How does it work with household accounts though?

If the voucher owner is not the head of the household, the voucher owner would probably need to transfer the voucher to the head who owns the points to make a redemption.

Interesting point, is the person already part of your household? If they are you could always give it a shot and see what they say. Half of what you get out of Virgin really depends on the agent.

Early this week i spotted some exit row seats available but not clickable, the first agent was categorically a flat out no, only the gate agents can assign them. The second agent booked them straight away, so you could get lucky.

Finally got around to booking. I called to book an reward flight for my partner and parent and mentioned I would like to use my reward voucher as a companion voucher. The agent was quite sceptical at whether I can use the voucher even when I am not on the booking and took some time to review the T&Cs. Eventually he agreed that there is nothing on the T&Cs that say the voucher holder need to travel in the same PNR, and proceeded to confirm the booking.

    My observations are:
-There is no computer/system restrictions on voucher use, it is all done manually by the agents as mentioned by @Jordiib
-The poeple on the booking are both in my household account, but it does not seem like it matters as the T&C does not mention the voucher owner has to travel.
-The booking was made using miles in my account so no gifting of vouchers was involved.

In a nutshell, it seems like it is possible to make a booking with a reward voucher, without the voucher holder actually travelling on the booking.

This is super interesting and thank you. Been advised for years person who earned the voucher would need to travel to utilise as a companion voucher. Will review T&Cs in case need to push back.

I think what it is is that (as Red) you can book a flight for someone else from your own VS account, using your voucher, but you can’t transfer it to someone else, i.e. so they could make the booking from their own account.
