Forums Frequent flyer programs British Airways Club Vegas vs San Jose for a Southern California trip

  • 129 posts

We need to be in Southern California next autumn for a specific 2 weeks, starting in LA and have 2 days we can fly out so pretty inflexible.

No reward availability to Los Angeles, San Francisco or San Diego (even with new style 2-4-1) but flights are available to Vegas (LAS) or San Jose (SJC).

LAS is an A350 route so we would get Club Suite. Also probably more flights to LA and other airports in the greater LA area, plus possibility of a day or two in Vegas before we go to LA. On downside, LAS might be more of a party route so less relaxing flight, maybe and more international arrivals so that could be an issue with immigration, though we haven’t really had any major delays anywhere so far…

SJC looks to be 787-8 so old CW, but probably a better arrivals experience as I think LHR is the only international route. There are fewer flights to LAX but some are Alaska which is OW – we are BA Gold so benefits there, and more business orientated so quieter flight maybe?

Leaning towards Vegas, mostly for A350 reasons, but any views?

I’d probably lean towards LAS, if only for the better chance of getting Club Suite (not guaranteed of course; the aircraft can be switched as they have for our upcoming flights to Barbados).

We have flown into LAS with BA, albeit in F on a 747 some years ago now. I don’t recall any major immigration delays – our worst experiences in that regard have been at Miami. On that trip we then flew to Oakland with Southwest Airlines after a few days in Vegas. We’ve flown with them on a few occasions and would recommend if that’s an option. Unlike many US airlines these days they include checked baggage.

Depending on when you travel you may find CW to LAS full of conference delegates.

Also flew with Alaska recently, on a Singapore Airlines miles redemption booking (benefitting from BA status!). They were fine also – got lounge access at Portland Airport which was OK if nothing special. Not sure they have a lounge at SJC though…

Thanks @marks7389. Aware of risk of aircraft change, seems unlikely SJC will get anything other than a 787 so unlikely to get Club Suite, whereas a swap on LAS would likely be 777 and many of them are CS already.

I don’t think there is a OneWorld lounge at SJC but there should be a Priority Pass lounge.

Six 777-300ERs still with “old” CW, but hopefully you’ll be fine on that route. A refit is planned for the 787s, but its all been rather delayed and there is nothing public at the moment as to what the current plans are.

Going Vegas. Fingers crossed for the A350 sticking.

Won’t be a 787 in the autumn as it too hot for fully laden 787 in the Vegas heat. I flew on a a350 there in December and its very comfortable ride , can’t see it getting swapped back to a 777 anytime soon.

Have been v Impressed with Cathay and Finnair A350s so hopefully BA haven’t broken it too badly! Decent chance of Club Suite to LAS, couple of nights there, $120 Alaskan flight in their First to LAX then plenty of time to work out the rest of the trip. Sorted.
