We’re off to Venice again for our 25th in the spring. I’d booked Venissa, but cancelled after I remembered that eating in Italy is about great ingredients cooked simply to create amazing food. As much as we like the Michelin faff, we are starting to move to fine dining that is comfortable and friendly. L’Enclume was our last swanky place and it’s surprisingly laid back for a 3* restaurant.
So any recommendations for something to mark a 25th wedding anniversary in Venice (where we went many years ago) that is suitably memorable without all the faff?
Osteria alle Testiere – world class fish – Michael Winner’s favourite – if that is a positive or negative for you…
Da Ivo…. Clooney had his stag night dinner here…. see my previous comment re Michael Winner.

Aaaah, then we definitely have a winner !
Michael Winner must have died over ten years ago? Once these places are ‘celebrity’ endorsed and written up in every magazine/guide they aren’t the same. You will find the largest potato farmer in Idaho there and other tourists who squirm when they see a fish head, but not a lot of Italians.

Just looking at the place it’s exactly the kind of place we like. I remember somewhere a lot like this where I had my first food culture shock a very long time ago watching an Italian discuss the menu with the waiter at length rather than just order. I like places that care deeply about food and don’t just see things as transactional.
We keep returning to Antinoo’s. Not because the food is the best on the planet, although it is very good, but because the location is one of the very finest in the city. Book one of the 6 tables on the terrace overlooking the Grand Canal, just across the water from the Gritti, time your meal to watch the sunset, arrive and leave at the private jetty by water taxi, and you will have an evening to remember.
You can eat well in almost any city on the world. Only Venice offers an experience like Antinoo’s.

We stayed at the Centurion a few years ago and I agree the location is lovely, but I’d also recommend a visit to the Guggenheim when in the area and a stop at the corner pub for a Spritz.

“Memorable without the faff” is exactly how I would describe it. Well worth a visit
Nevodi in Castello. Definitely worth a visit one evening and easy to get to on the boat.
Castello is an area where Venetians still live, so lots of authentic places. Via Giuseppe Garibaldi has tons of bars for aperitivo before dinner, and if you go to the one at the end of the street you can watch the sunset over the grand canal and the church on the little island. The boat stops at Arsenale which is best for Castello.
Nevodi has amazing food, I still think about the food there. Everything is bought fresh from the markets in the morning so the menu changes depending what’s good that day.
It’s not touristy like so many restaurants in Venice, but they do speak English and they are very welcoming.
