Forums Frequent flyer programs The British Airways Club Very confused with redemption pricing!

Had a Y booking Lgw-Trn one way, £9 and 7250 miles. CE came available so I rebooked for £25 and 8500 miles. And ba have said I’ll also get £8.50 of the original spend back, as well as the miles.

So net uplift of 1250 miles and £16.50 all told.

I know the first rule of f(l)ight club and all that but this seems unusually generous even before the £8.50 bonus refund…

I think this is largely down to the combination of Avios and cash selected in each case.

Your CE flights are at the “original’ £25 each way rate, for which the ET equivalent would be 4750 plus £17.50 off-peak. The CE upgrade would have been a bit more of a step up from there, particularly on the Avios required, but because the rate you paid originally was not the best from an Avios valuation perspective, the upgrade to your selected CE rate seems cheaper.

I’m surprised they are offering you any cash back. Normally the change fee would be £35, but capped at the cash paid on the original ticket. Unless the policy has changed on short haul, I wonder if the agent is confused as a 50p penalty would only apply if you had originally selected the highest Avios option.

Normally that’s the worst deal unless you apply a very low Avios valuation, but does mean any change or cancellation comes at negligible cost.

There’s a lot of IT weirdness going on at BA atm. I recently cancelled a domestic award flight I’d paid about 4k avios plus £42 taxes for – I was expecting to lose £35 of that but in the event they refunded it all except £1.

Definitely not agent error as I cancelled it online and – really surprisingly – it told me immediately what the refund would be. Which is a big move away from the opaque “we’ll get the calculator and rule book out after you hit cancel then decide if we owe you anything”.

Also thought I’d picked that outbound combo as being good value (esp if I needed to cancel) but hey ho. The flight is busy (£500+) in club one way so doubly impressed.
