I flew back from Barbados last night on one of these. I had checked Rob’s review of his flight home from NY a few years back and was pleased to see that the plane did indeed have the layout in the photograph marked ‘what the new cabin will look like’ – ie 3 across. However, I thought this was the worst business class cabin I have ever travelled in. It felt like being in an old peoples home – everyone lined up in a chair waiting for the trolley to dish out food. There was no privacy, no storage, tiny screen that didn’t co-ordinate with the tray, poor IFF which broke – just horrible! We flew out to Miami on a 350 with a very different seat – which I also didn’t like as you seem to be sunk into a big plastic box. Very claustrophobic. For the record I love the Q Suite – so it’s not that I’m impossible to please….
No need to applogise. It is well past its heyday so you are entitled to have evolved your standards. I fear Virgin are dropping only vague hints about refitting the older planes but won’t actually do anything and just retire them eventually.
They are due to be retired with deliveries of the new A330-900s. First two are due to leave the fleet this year, I believe, but it will be a while yet before they are all gone.
The whole thing about the layout being new is several years old now, but it used to be worse with very narrow aisles and a 1-2-1 layout. You don’t have to stare at people across the aisle now with A side seats, if you can secure them, so that’s an improvement….
At least there is a plan for these. Nothing has been announced regarding the 787s with the same seat.

Wow, cannot agree more. Now that I have imagined it, hard to forget it.
The A333s are to be avoided, and they seem to now form the basis of the leisure and regions fleet. I booked a TP run the other day, and didn’t check the aircraft type, so I’ve got the delights of two A333s back-to-back to look forward to!
I would rather travel in old BA CW than the Virgin ‘coffins’!

I wouldn’t.
Everyone’s mileage varies.
