Hi,
Just wondering if anyone has any experience of using Virgin miles to book KLM reward seats? As we know, the VA website is less than user friendly and searches are hit and miss. When looking on KLM it comes up with availability but @112,500 (LHR/AMS/BKK) On VA website if you can find it is @31,000. SLIGHT DIFFERENCE!
My question is – If availability is showing via KLM,can I book using VA miles at the redemption rate of 31,000 rather than the 112,500 KLM charge? Is it just a case of contacting the call centre?
I’ve read the recent post regarding VA/KLM/AF but just looking for someone who has first hand knowledge. Any help or thoughts appreciated.
Yes. As long as the seat shows on Virgin’s site it SHOULD be bookable.
There is a 90% chance that trying to book online gives an error. If so, call Virgin and they can do it for you.
It costs whatever the Virgin site says it costs! The website has many problems but I have never seen it mis-price.
I am typing this in Dubai after flying down on Air France booked in exactly the same way.
Are your prices in different reward currencies? KLM is charging in Flying Blue XP (or whatever it is), but VS are charging in Virgin Points. That might have something to do with it – apples and pears.
@AL – in most partner schemes it is necessary to have “lowest price” in the native scheme for partners to see any availability. By accident or design this is not the case with AF/KLM and Virgin. Sometimes the flying blue price will be well above minimum, but it’s bookable (on the phone) with Virgin. You need to search online first.
@Rob — please don’t write an article about this. Would like this ‘quirk’ to remain largely undiscovered and unexploited.
Thanks for the input everyone. Just clarify.
There is reward availability showing on KLM website (flying blue) but it doesn’t show on up vA website. Will I be able to book what’s showing on KLM using VA miles via the call centre and at the virgin redemption.
Sorry if this seems obvious to some, but only ever redeemed on VA flights previously.
Thanks

No
You need to see it on Virgin’s site. You should be able to get most of the way through booking then payment fails. At that point I’d call up.

Yes, indeed. KLM reward pricing is dynamic, so there is more availability if you’re willing to pay more miles. Virgin’s not. Used to book a lot of UK to Schiphol flights with VIrgin miles. They were always cheaper than spending FB.
