I have a bunch of Avios and am not sure how to redeem them best. We want a holiday somewhere warm 4 hours or less from the UK. We were looking at Gran Canaria or Teneriffe but my work has just told me I can’t travel in November/need to be available – and so it’s more likely I’d be looking at October availability; or just give up until next year. There doesn’t seem to be much availability in October, and where there is the taxes seem a bit more: £40 pp more than Gran Canaria to redeem flights to Majorca, which means that for 3 of us, the price of a redemption in economy is about the same as cash fare on easyJet. Hoping for ideas that give real value over EasyJet (like the Canaries)… where EasyJet costs more (extra distance?) and where the taxes are nice and low (£10-11) Any help with this appreciated. We have 60k Avios and three travelers (one child).
We do an annual February short trip on BA with Avios. To find some sun we’ve done Gibraltar, Rome and Marrakech. The latter was the only one that was properly hot but the others definitely felt warm coming out of the UK winter.
How about Portugal? There’s some great October availability according to Reward Flight Finder. You’ve also got 5 airports to consider – so a better chance of seats. It’s also pretty warm in October.
There have been reports of easyJet incentivising gate staff to check all hand bags and charge the rule breakers. easyJet checked bag prices can also be very high.
BA is a winner for avios redemptions with bags included.
Correction, I was basing expected taxes off seatspy. A quick look at BA reward flights is showing tiny amounts for tax.
You can choose to pay less in taxes by paying more avios, but this may not be the best use of your avios. Either way, do bear in mind that Easyjet headline prices don’t include any luggage and only a small cabin bag, and the cost of adding these can increase the price of your flights significantly.
I’ve booked a number of flights to Europe this year since BAC changes. Unless travelling with a small under seat bag which is included, when adding a cabin bag EasyJet has been more expensive than BA every time. As others have said, you only get a very small under seat bag for the headline price and to add a trolley bag or suitcase in the hold, it usually becomes very expensive with the latter often the cheaper option.
I haven’t seen a cheaper Easyjet flight than comparable BA for a long while now. Needing to add the carry on bag kills any cheap price.

Totally agree. My daughter has just booked a one way flight from Europe to LGW for a mid morning flight on a Sunday in September. The EasyJet flight would have cost her €117 with under seat bag only. She booked hbo with BA for €79. The flights leave 10 minutes apart!
