Forums Payment cards Barclaycard Avios Warning: 2 years until new sign up bonus is not actually 2 years

Wanted to give folks a heads up that, unlike Amex (who seems to count the day when you requested account closure as the day the account was closed), Barclaycard counts it from when they close the account in their own systems. In my case it was 23 days after I requested it be closed (according to Barclays Premier support), and there was no notification nor mail with the “final” date of the account closure. So give it a wide berth before applying for the Avios Plus card again after 2 years pass according to your own records.

Well, yes, that’s presumably in the churner’s guide 101 and if it isn’t (fortunately or unfortunately I don’t have a copy) it’s not exactly very surprising. From multiple reports, Amex also doesn’t necessarily count the closure date as being the day it was requested either; there’s a subsequent letter. Leaving a margin of error is often wise and remunerative/rewarding in many different situations.

From what people have posted on other threads asking questions like “when was my AMEX account actually closed?” It seems that AMeX does not take the day you request account closure to be the date the account is closed but a later date to allow for final transactions and final payment to be processed.

People have lost SUBs by not noting the correct date and applying too early.

I guess the churners should be grateful to Barclays and Amex for providing a long term cure for their premature application problem.

I’m not sure that a cure for premature application is simply rejecting your rewards if you put it in too early.

Well, he won’t be doing it again in a hurry.
