Just renewed my Aviva (multi car) policy using Amex.
In Dec I got my car insurance with Tesco – they took Amex
Did you go direct or through a comparison site?
As paulm555 mentioned, am wondering if having to pay commission and generating lower revenue forces them to refuse Amex?
Is paying by Amex more important than the policy price or the quality & reliability of the insurer and their customer service etc?
There are so many factors I’d consider before even looking at method of payment for something as important as insurance.

The variation in price across multiple price comparison searches is so enormous, a percent here or there to generate a few hundred points surely can’t be worth it.
I don’t even know why anyone recommends any one insurer as what has worked out well for one person doesn’t necessarily work for another. That insurer’s risk model might penalise a different person and different price comparison websites have deals with different insurers.

Of course, you are correct, but if you have two companies with similar offering and price, it’s good to know if you can pay with Amex.

It’s worth using 2-3 of these price checkers; they can vary quite a bit. I’ve seen £100 difference on the cheapest price.

In some cases the difference between the cheapest two or three can be a matter of a few pounds. If the premium is over a thousand then picking one that takes Amex that is slightly more expensive may make sense.
More importantly you should look to reinsure well ahead of the expiration date of your existing policy. There is data on Money Saving Expert on the optimum time — I think it was about three or four weeks last time I insured my car. The saving is much more valuable than any Amex points, or the difference between the cheapest half dozen insurers if you leave it last minute.
