Discuss today's stories:
Hi we booked a return flight to Tampa for a two week break in May next year but we need to cancel the trip. We were able to book the whole trip using 112000 Avios points and a companion voucher but we had to pay an eye watering 1200 pounds in airport taxes. We have looked at the BA website and we cannot find any information we require. Tried calling them ….need I say more. Anybody have any valid information that can help us? Thanks in advance.
Yes, you’ll get the Avios, the companion voucher and the taxes back minus the admin fee which is £50 per person I think now.
Edited to add that you don’t want to take a Future Travel Voucher though (by cancelling online) as you’ll then have everything locked into the voucher. You’ll need to call them to cancel so you get a refund.
I’m not an expert but I think you lose 35 pounds each and get all of the rest back.
Yes, avios bookings are always cancellable for a refund – although at the moment you have to do it on the phone – and you get everything refunded minus £35pp cancellation fee. The 241 voucher will be returned but it will retain its original expiry date.
If you don’t need the avios or cash back right away, you can elect to put the booking into a future travel voucher (FTV) either by phone or by completing the ‘cancellation’ form: https://www.britishairways.com/travel/webforms/public/en_gb?eId=120001&wfpId=covidn
The FTV is just your existing payments held in credit for you to use at a future date – the advantages are that it keeps the 241 voucher ‘alive’ in the FTV until 30 Sep 23 and that there are no cancellation fees. You can still cancel it later if required, at which point para 1 applies.
but we had to pay an eye watering 1200 pounds in airport taxes. .
The vast bulk of that amout is the BA surcharge ans not proper government taxes such as APD or airport fees/
As others have stated you’ll pay the cancellation fee to get a refund of everything.
You can take this immediatly as an FTV then call / use the chat at a later dare to process or you can persist now with the phone / chat and sort it sooner
If you aren’t desperate for the voucher / avios / cash then it might be worth waiting to see if BA cancel the flight or reschedule by more than 4 hours in which case you can have a full refund with no cancellation fees to pay.
To add to the suggestions above. If you cancel then you’ll get refunded minus a cancellation fee (plus, I, think, an Avios restocking fee), and this looks like it will cost £50 per person. You’ll need to ring to do this as BA have removed the optionality from their website.
If you opt for a Future Travel Voucher (FTV) you’ll lock in all the elements for a future transaction up to Sep 2023. Getting an FTV can be done on the website. There is no fee.
If you then use the FTV to book flights, you should be refunded any excess avios and £ components. You need to ring to use the FTV.
This would be worth doing if there are any flights you want to book at the moment.
Also – in theory – you could get an FTV. Then use it on a much cheaper route in July/Aug 2022 to be majority refunded. Probably those new flights can also be put into an FTV. If not – they can still be cancelled for £50pp

They cancellation fees are £35 per person and you get the rest of the avios/taxes back… not sure where you’re getting £50 per person but it’s definitely £35.
