Forums Payment cards American Express Will paying by Paypoint annoy Amex?

  • 48 posts

I’ve never payed via paypoint using Amex but can see from the forum that many do. While I understand that it often goes through if you can find a place, would it jeopardise your relationship with Amex?

I ask because I have a PRG and was thinking of paying an upcoming TV license bill using this route. From my research it looks like I could also pay lots of other bills with it.

It is tempting because this route can generate a lot of points for me but I wouldn’t do it if it could cause issues with Amex. Does anyone have any advice regarding this?

I pay my council tax with that method. Amex statement only mentions the supermarket’s name, not how I spent the money there.

Same. Have been doing it for years. The only people it could annoy is the Co-Op, in which case they are free to stop it.

I’ve done that for the past decade or so, and no problems. For Amex is just a supermarket purchase.
Also pay TV licence that way, and used to pay internet that way too (now BT allows Paypal, so can do it from home).

I had an offer on my ARCC a couple of months ago, spend £20 at the Co-op, get £5 cashback. Worked on my Council Tax payment.

I expect the Paypoint commission (possible 3%) that the Co-Op receive is more than the cost of the credit card transaction fee? If it is, then it is cash strapped councils who are paying for this perk. I suppose they have to accept cash payments for Council Tax, the number of people paying at PayPoint will be small, and it is cheaper than maintaining Cash Offices.

not sure what you are referring to by lots of other bills. There is probably an entire thread on paying energy bills, BG requires me to keep a DD to stay on the cheaper tariff so watch out for things like that. Otherwise you should be good.

I’d be surprised if it was 3%. They might as well accept Amex on the council website.

PayPal is usually the most expensive payment method but it’s very simple for both parties and accesible to users. The issue for councils taking Amex is not really the fee as Amex will match whatever the council is paying for other cards, but the admin for Amex which is extra admin/inconvenient.

PayPal is one of the most expensive, I agree, but this is about paypoint?

Apologies, being a bit thick. PayPoint is also very expensive for both the shops and the recipient of the money. Unfortunate when it’s really aimed at the less well off. Shops use it to drive traffic and utilities, councils etc use it to improve collection rates so accept the higher costs.

You can pay more than you realise with Amex. On the subject of PayPal, always check whether you can pay your council tax this way – I do, despite the council website only accepting MC and visa. It’s a lot easier than Pay Point sounds as well; I just pay it in 2 or 3 installments for the year.

I also had a chunky vet’s bill earlier this week. Our local branch purports not take accept Amex but I’m currently spending towards the 241 so I had look on their corporate website and they do accept it for online payments. I knew what the final bill was going to be so I made the payment and it was accepted – when I went to collect our hapless moggie I just told them I’d paid online. They tried to argue that this wasn’t possible either, but when they checked their system the payment was there so they couldn’t really take issue with that!

Thank you all I paid my TV License using my PRG at a CO-OP paypoint. No issue what so ever at the till. Transaction showing as CO-OP on the Amex app.

When I was in local Co-op recently, person in front was paying his Council tax via Paypoint. Sadly not my Council which does not accept payment by PayPal or Paypoint. Payment is only by direct debit, by phone visa/mastercard/maestro/solo/delta or cash paid directly into its bank account at local branch of NatWest. I think the Council tax payers of this Borough are keeping that branch of NatWest open! I have no idea how you pay if you live away from the main town and want to pay with cash. As a Surrey Council, they probably think everyone is wealthy – which they are not.
