Forums Other Destination advice Will UK allow me to enter with Australian passport expiring in 4 months? + visa

  • 1 post

    Hello!

I am an Australian student living in the UK under the Youth Mobility Scheme visa. I am travelling to the US on May 24th for two weeks, returning to the UK on June 6th.

My passport is currently valid but expires October 25th 2023. Online it seems that I will be allowed to re-enter the UK on my current passport so long as it is valid for the duration of my stay.

As I am living here under the Youth Mobility Scheme visa, I am planning to renew my passport after my return to the UK. My question is if I will be allowed into the UK on June 6th if my Australian passport is expiring in the following 4 months after that?

Thanks for any help! Have a good day.

    Theresa.

Is your visa tied to your passport? I’d say that the ideal scenario would be to get a new passport now before your trip.

The two pertinent pieces of information that I can find are that “You can enter the UK at any time while your visa is valid, and leave and come back at any time during your stay” but also the fact that “Your passport should be valid for the whole of your stay”. If you intend to leave the UK before October 25, I think it will all be OK.

Are you sure US would allow you to enter? Most countries need more than 6 months validity to enter.

“Your passport should be valid for the whole of your stay”.

Well you can have a UK visa for longer than the life of your passport, so that doesn’t mean much. Anyway these days most visa vignettes are for 90 days regardless of the length of the visa, and you are required to get a foreigner’s ID card (a BRP) after you arrive, which will state the full duration you have been permitted to live in the UK.

Even if your passport was expired, while the e-gates would not work there would be no problem entering the UK if your BRP is in date. However the issue with an expired passport would be that airlines wouldn’t let you check in to a flight.

So the question is not really whether you can enter the UK in these circumstances (you can) but whether the airline agents in the US will let you board the flight.

I think it’s unlikely airline agents would prevent boarding in this scenario especially if a valid BRP is presented, but renewing the passport would be safest especially if needed to fulfil US entry requirements.

Unless its changed, i flew to MIA with my passport expiring within 14 days for a 14 day trip, came the day it was supposed to expire and no issues. but YMMV

Yes the US doesn’t require any extra validity on your passport past the end of your planned trip. The EU requires 3 months for non-EU passport holders.

    Is that a UK passport?

The OP has an Australian one and the rules may be different.

(For a UK passport to enter the US it needs to be valid only for the length of the trip and no extra time needed.)

That is true for countries that are in the so called “6-month club”, the list is however very long so in practice the US doesn’t require extra validity
