Recommendations for a long weekend in Malaga in December. Go!
P.S. I’ve been many times and have some favourites, but interested in hearing what yours are!
What’s it like in January? Been thinking of popping over. Never been.
For what? Accommodation/food/entertainment/sightseeing?
You can get bright sunny days in winter but it can also rain.
@Swiss Jim – for the last couple of years I have done two or three weekend dashes over the winter months to see some sun including January. I have had sun at least 80% of the time and it’s been warm enough to not need more than a jacket in the evening and early morning. Though last time I was there I got caught up in DANA Mk 2 which was a pretty hair raising experience so bad weather can happen!
Malaga is my happy place, and works well for a weekend break.
@ringingup as @NorthernLass says, what are you looking for specifically?
Your favourite restaurant and bars. And anything else off the beaten track!
I think my usual haunts are not the sorts of places people would seek out so my recommendations won’t be much good to you. I don’t tend to go into the city centre and instead stay in one of the suburbs. I eat at the local places where there’s only one waitress called Maria who serves the entire cafe all by herself but still somehow remembers what you usually order for breakfast and how you take your coffee when you come in more than once!
We last went for 4 nights in February, the first night it poured down. We caught the sun during the day but it was distinctly chilly on the rooftop bar of our hotel (A C Palacio) at night, they were handing out blankets. Very Insta-worthy though with views of the sunset and the Alcazaba. Food was good but not outstanding.
We rented a car for 2 days and drove to Granada to re-visit the Alhambra after 30 years. It was stunning with the Sierra Nevada (properly!) as the backdrop.
As a history geek I love the museum and Málaga Castle.
There’s an Argentine steakhouse I can’t recall the name of just now which is really good. Great joints of meat in the window!
@NorthernLass is right the Alhambra is stunning, have been a couple of times now. The first time was a February about 13 years ago and I was foolishly not prepared for it to snow. I had to go out wearing most of the clothes I had packed to stay warm!
If you have visited the usual sites, how about the Automobile museum or the Russian art museum? I’ve not been in years though
There’s the Picasso museum, though I’m of the persuasion who thinks his work looks like a 5-year-old did it 😂
Also apparently there are some Moorish-style baths where you can have a scrub and a massage, haven’t managed to get there but might be a nice option for the winter months.
The Gibralfaro castle and Alcazaba are well worth visiting – most people who go to the Costa del Sol don’t know they exist but there’s 1000 years of history in an idyllic setting.
There’s the Málaga museo de la imaginación – lots of weird setups for you to pose in and take photos if that’s your thing, or you have kids.

Málaga FC will play at home a couple of times
(def. 11 Jan.) – it’s always busy and fun if that’s your thing.
I’m looking for a very good fish restaurant in Malaga City centre, any thoughts appreciated TIA.

Beluga. Not a fish restaurant per se, but very fish focussed.
You’ve been to the Costa del Sol, @JDB?!
We like La Cosmopolita. Yet to try its sister restaurant La Cosmo.
Less upscale but very fresh: Los Mellizos, was recommended by a local and we can attest.

These things are much more specific. e.g. Málaga is quite agreeable, notably out of season, Marbella is gopping.
You do make a chuckle, @JDB, as well as adding new words to my vocabulary!
I didn’t quite envisage you devouring a full English in Fuengirola or Torremolinos, but Marbella Old Town is quite pleasant!
As for restaurants, I’ll have a look at those – OH hates fish and seafood but most Spanish places tend to cater for carnivores by default, IME.
