@runnerbean. We’ve been a number of times to Mauritius
    Emirates GLA-DXB-MRU
    BA 241. Direct lon-MRU
241 Indirect via JNB with Comair connection ( no longer available)
Several times with Emirates although flight times were awful with night layovers ( think 2-7 am).
Cash a few times with BA.

Usually have a week in a hotel in south , hire car , and Oberoi in north .
It’s become very expensive so it’s a few years since our last visit. As jaded NHS staff it was great for recharging /relaxation. Since we retired we’ve been far more energetic with more active trips—- we can flop on our return!

Thanks – will put the thread in my forward planner. We were also both NHS for nearly 40 yrs too and gave up at the nth reorganisation and reapplying for jobs yet again. It was rewarding work but completely exhausting. Retirement is just delicious.

It is! You can really relish every trip instead of just trying to recover from exhaustion and five years on I still get giddy that I don’t have to go back to (proper) work when I get home.

I still can’t pin down destinations but I think our Mexico trip last December is a real standout, even though OH was nervous the whole time! F to MEX with a 241 (saving £600 by starting in DUB), ticking off bucket list items like Teotihuacan and the shrine of our Lady of Guadalupe (I’m not religious but I love anything unusual), then seeing humpback whales and orcas off the Pacific coast.

Watching turtles hatching on the beach at dawn in Grand Cayman is another – thanks to this site our annual visit has been in the comfort of CW for the past 8 years. I love that you can hop in a hire car and drive (on the left!) anywhere you want to go without worrying about dodgy areas or tourist scams.

I also love America for its landscapes, museums and the ability to find so many things you never knew you needed in Walmart. It’s like being in a real life movie.

It’s hardly an exotic destination, but anyone who’s honest with themselves knows that there is really no better place in the world than a quiet spot in the Cyclades.

Except, possibly, the Dolomites. Or maybe Rome. Oh yeah, Venice has to be on the list, too.

I could go on. We are very fortunate to live in the greatest continent on the planet.

quite adventurous but we found China a level beyond us. I’d love to hear what it was like if you ate any of the truly local foods

I took pleasure in trying the local versions of KFC, TGI Fridays and Costa coffee… Was a welcome change from the 11am and 5pm forced feeding of standard Chinese dishes on the lazy Susan that the tour operator provided

No tour guide for us we went just the two of us having a mooch. However we lots of McDonalds and Starbucks were our favourite safe haunts. Street food less so. When we wandered the streets of Zhangjiajie we didn’t know if we’d ever fancy food again! Fascinating but too much for us!
