On Tuesday I will be running a report from my visit to the Qatar Airways lounge at the new Hamad International airport in Doha.

I thought I’d use a post today to show you a couple of random things from the rest of Hamad International.

Random shot no. 1

Hamad International Qatar Doha concourse

Yes, you fly for 6 hours and you still find yourself surrounded by a WH Smith and a Camden Food Company.  It’s just like the East Midland Trains platforms at St Pancras.

Random shot no. 2

Word fail me here.  I imagine a conversation:

“Well, we’ve just spent $17 billion building one of the biggest and most expensive airports in the world, and we only ran five years over schedule.  We need a suitable piece of sculpture for the main concourse, something to show the world that Qatar is on the map.”

“I’ve got an idea, leave it to me …..”

What genius thought of the giant teddy sculpture? :O

  • john says:

They paid $6.8mm for that bear at auction. You have to hand it to the artist, that is a lot of money for some bronze. There are two others in private collections.

I suppose money was tight at the end of the project.

    Haha, made me laugh!

Look for the bear necessities the simple bear necessities!

I went through a month ago and thought the exact same thing about the shops and bear, there was a Hamleys shop hidden away also

I too was shocked when I saw a Camden food co. outlet at Vancouver airport in Canada a while back… really spoiled the idea of it being an ‘authentic London brand’ for me 😛

Incidentally, are there any bars serving booze at the airport?

I worked in Qatar many moons ago and at the time there were was no booze on sale in the on-trade ie bars, cafes, hotels etc.

I gather since then that hotels have been permitted to sell alcohol.

    But at the airport?

Krug for breakfast in the lounge as you will see on Tuesday!

      • squills says:

Ah but lounges are closed areas, I would expect that. But are there any public bars in the concourse where you could see people ‘imbibing’? I think the main point is to keep it discreet and a great big pub/ up-market oyster bar etc wouldn’t be that..
